USA vs GB Davis Cup Preview and Predictions

The 2022 Davis Cup finals have officially started. And one of the most anticipated matches of the event is the one being played today. As you can see, it’s the USA against Great Britain in what promises to be a great series of games to watch. To remind you, given the format for the Davis Cup this year, all three games for this one will be played today. This means that two singles and one doubles game will be played, with the doubles game only being played if it’s a tie after the singles.

Davis Cup USA vs GB

As for the teams that both the USA and GB have at their disposal, there are some big names. Great Britain has listed Cam Norrie, Andy Murray, Dan Evans, Joe Salisbury, and Neal Skupski in their squad. And the USA has an equally impressive lineup consisting of Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Jack Sock, and Rajeev Ram. One notable absence is obviously Frances Tiafoe, who recently made the semi-finals at the US Open.

So – which way will this game swing? Well, the official lineups haven’t been revealed yet. And I expect that this won’t be known until a few hours before the match begins. However, I have my own thoughts on who will play where, so let me give my preview and predictions now.

GB vs USA – Anticipated Matches and Predictions

Based on the lineups for both teams, it is possible to make predictions as to who will play where. So let me share my thoughts on this right now:

Number One Singles

If we were to go on ranking alone, then the number one singles match should involve Cam Norrie and Taylor Fritz. And to be honest, I can’t see either team switching things up to try and ‘stack’ the lineup. Fritz actually has a winning record against Norrie, with a head-to-head of 5-4 in his favor. But Norrie has been playing some great tennis since the summer. So I would have to shoot with a win for Cameron Norrie in this match, although it could go right down to the wire.

Number Two Singles

Again, following the rankings and singles prowess of the players in both teams, I expect to see Tommy Paul going up against Dan Evans here. However, it is possible for both teams to throw in a surprise listing at number two. I wouldn’t write off Andy Murray being thrown in at number two, especially since he has also been playing decent tennis recently. And the USA also has Jack Sock who they could throw in. But this is less likely since Sock is a very handy doubles player, and their team only has 4 guys available.

If Paul plays Evans, I’d probably give the edge to Paul given his run of form. But if he plays Murray, it is a more even contest based on game style.

Doubles Match

Team GB has arguably the strongest doubles pair in the competition with Salisbury and Skupski. Salisbury has just won the US Open, but interestingly, his partner is on the other side of the net in this match. And Skupski was the runner-up at the 2022 US Open for doubles. So they definitely enter this one as favorites.
