As tennis fans, August/September is one of the most exciting times on tour. Of course, during this period we have a couple of huge 1000 level events in Canada and Cincinnati. And when those are wrapped up, all eyes turn to the main event – the US Open. This brings me to the main focus for today.
As we are on the cusp of the 144th edition of the US Open, I figured now was the right time to give you my US Open 2024 predictions for the women’s singles event. If you haven’t checked up on the tournament yet, I can confirm that the main draw will start on Monday, August 26th. This is when the first-round matches will begin, and this marks the beginning of two full weeks of top-flight tennis.
Since I am focusing on the women’s singles event today, of course, I’ll be giving my two cents on a few areas relating to this event. Specifically, I’ve provided some outright predictions for the favourites, which demonstrate the more likely winners. But I’ve also looked at a few possible contenders who most pundits have ignored ahead of the 2024 US Open.
With all this in mind, let’s dive into my women’s singles predictions for the US Open 2024 right now.
Red hot favourites – US Open 2024 women’s singles predictions
Contents
As mentioned above, my predictions are split into two main categories ahead of Flushing Meadows. Starting with the first category, I’ve come up with three women’s singles predictions from the group of ‘likely champions’ for 2024. Let me highlight these players and justify their selections below.
Aryna Sabalenka – most likely winner
Following her title at the Cincinnati Open, Aryna Sabalenka is now the number 2 player in the world once again. This means she will be the number 2 seed in New York, which comes with its own benefits like ‘easier’ opening rounds. However, with the way she’s playing, Sabalenka looks capable of destroying anyone on the fast hard courts of the USA.
She won the Cincinnati Open without losing a single set. And her victories included commanding wins over the likes of Swiatek and Pegula – the other two likely winners I’ve shortlisted. At the same time, she made the finals in 2023, so she will be hungrier than ever to get her hands on the title.
Iga Swiatek – great chance and 2022 champion
Despite a few subpar performances following her title at Roland Garros earlier this summer, Swiatek is still the world number one. This alone makes her an automatic contender for any event, even if she has been struggling (by her standards). With that said, Swiatek has won the US Open before, which she achieved in 2022.
Therefore, she has already proven that she can go all the way in front of that rowdy New York crowd.
Jessica Pegula – home favourite and Montreal winner in 2024
While Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek are way ahead of the pack as far as the odds are concerned, Pegula is still part of the ‘favourites’ group. In fact, she is the fifth favourite based on the most recent odds, behind Gauff and Rybakina. However, I’ve picked Jessica Pegula above those two for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, her form is incredible right now. She won the 1000-level event in Montreal and backed this up by reaching the finals in Cincinnati. Secondly, she’s an American, which means the crowd will go crazy for her if she makes a deep-draw run!
US Open 2024 women’s singles predictions – key underdogs
Now that we’ve covered the most likely winners for the 2024 US Open, let’s shift the focus. After all, there is no guarantee that one of the top seeds will win the tournament, even if that’s what the odds might suggest. In fact, there are many other dangerous players involved in the women’s singles this year.
Therefore, I’ve selected three underdog players who could surprise us all and go all the way at the 2024 US Open.
Naomi Osaka – two-time winner with good results this year
Naomi Osaka had been away from the WTA tennis scene until a little earlier this season. The former world number one initially had time away for her mental health and shortly after, she became a first-time mother. Of course, this shows she’s in a great place in her personal life as she has now returned to the tour in style.
As you might remember, she almost took down Iga Swiatek at Roland Garros back in May, and clay isn’t really a surface she likes. Furthermore, as she’s won the US Open in 2018 and 2020, I feel she is a key underdog to watch this year!
Mirra Andreeva – challenging the top players and due a big breakthrough
I first started to track this teenager’s results on the WTA Tour in early 2023. She burst on the scene in a big way with some serious wins during that summer, and she’s clearly making the most of her potential since she’s ranked 21 in the world. Furthermore, she made the semi-finals of Roland Garros earlier this year, which was already a major breakthrough.
However, given her talent and potential, I feel she could well have a more significant breakthrough in New York by going even further.
Jasmine Paolini – finalist of the last two Grand Slams
The third and final prediction I have for the underdog category is Jasmine Paolini. For some reason, when it comes to Grand Slam tennis, Paolini seems to turn into a superstar. She’s a real competitor, and she’s not afraid to go toe to toe with the best in the world. In fact, since she’s now ranked 6 in the world, she is included in that exclusive group!
As you can see, Paolini made the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon this summer, which is quite incredible. And while she has never made it past the 2nd round of the US Open in the past, her 2024 season just feels different. So, for me, she definitely deserves to be listed among the main competitors for my US Open 2024 women’s singles predictions.
Important factors to consider in connection with my US Open 2024 predictions
At this point, you’ve got all of my predictions and thoughts on who could claim the women’s singles title in New York. However, before you go ahead and wager on any of these players in the outright markets, there are a few things I wish to point out. On that note, I’d like to draw your attention to the notes below, as these will help guide you before backing one of those US Open 2024 predictions.
A lot depends on the draw
To clarify, the 2024 US Open draw has not yet been published, at the time of writing. The draw is set to be published on Thursday, August 22nd, and I will be following the developing stories concerning the draw closely. I point this out as the draw always has a big impact on any player’s chances of winning a Grand Slam tournament.
If they have somewhat easier opponents in the early rounds, they should be fresher when they get to the more challenging stages. However, the draw also showcases potential banana skins that any favoured player must successfully navigate to keep their dreams of a title alive.
Odds will change as the tournament progresses
Besides monitoring the draw and understanding how this impacts title chances, it’s important to understand the odds connected to the outright markets, too. Of course, outright markets describe the markets related to the specified individual winning the tournament. And before a single ball is hit, this is when you usually get the most appealing odds.
Why? Because the odds will shorten as an individual moves forward in the draw, meaning the potential return of backing that player shortens too. Then again, you can still get enticing prices for some players after a few rounds. However, I wouldn’t wait too long if you want to cover any of the main favourites.
Nothing is guaranteed in Grand Slam tennis
Lastly, I wish to stress that no matter what the odds might suggest, absolutely nothing is guaranteed in Grand Slam tennis. This is true for all sports, but we all lose track of this fact at times – especially when we start looking through the odds for outright markets. Therefore, the last thing you must remember before placing any of these bets is that even those with the shortest prices are not guaranteed to win!
I know – sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But there is a silver lining to this fact. While the favourites are not guaranteed to win, the flip side of the coin is that the underdogs can also upset the odds, too. Only when they do it, you often stand to gain a decent return if you’ve covered them.
Anyway, I don’t say this to push you in either direction. I say this as a friendly reminder so you can then cover the most suitable US Open 2024 women’s singles predictions that align with your betting intentions.
