Some of those who did not get past the final qualifying round will have a slim chance of joining the main draw as US Open Lucky Losers. Simply defined, Lucky Losers are the participants that are kept on standby in case of any unexpected withdrawals from the competition.

There have already been two notable exits in the women’s category, both of which have been instantly replaced by US Open 2023 Lucky Losers.

Kimberly Birrell: replaced Biaca Andreescu (Out in 1st round)

The Australian reached the last round of qualifying, however despite being the favorite, she was defeated in two sets by American Fiona Crawley. Birrell had trailed Spain’s Leyre Romero Gormaz and Latvia’s Darja Semenistaja.

Kimberly was fortunate in that, in addition to being picked as one of the US Open 2023 Lucky Losers, she came out on top in the order draw. Bianca Andreescu was the first competitor to withdraw because to a back issue. Kimberly Birrell will take her position.

In her debut, Birrell faced local tennis player Jennifer Brady. In the first set, the American tennis player converted a couple of break points to win the set. In the second set, everything was more even and ended in a tiebreak that favored Brady, who clinched her victory.

Yanina Wickmayer: replaced Paula Badosa (Out in 2nd round)

Wickmayer faced stiff competition in the US Open qualifying round. First, she faced Canadian Katherine Sebov, with whom she had to react fast after dropping the first set. She then defeated Harriet Dart of the United Kingdom in straight sets.

Yanina’s first defeat occurred against Sachia Vickery, when Wickmayer was unable to continue after falling behind 3-1 in the first set. Fortunately, it was nothing serious, and following the injury of Paula Baldosa, the Belgian player took her position.

The Belgian player defeated Vera Zvonareva in the first round in two sets. That result gave her a boost to go for more in the second round. However, she ran into an excellent game from Madison Keys, who won in straight sets.

Ankita Raina

The Indian player was on the verge of making it to the main draw. Miriam Bulgaru was knocked out in the first round of qualifying. She then defeated Spain’s Bolsova in straight sets.

The 30-year-old’s experience was insufficient to overcome the Swedish player Mirjam Bjorklund. Raina was ousted after only two sets. Ankita must now wait for a last-minute withdrawal.

Marina Bassols

At the age of 23, the Spanish tennis player is in the midst of a regular season in which she has achieved her highest ranking in the WTA rankings. Her ascension up the rankings ladder, on the other hand, was a clear conclusion following her first two performances.

Marina Bassols had to turn the score around after losing the first set with Arina Rodionova and Valerie Glozman. It was not the same against Yafsng Wang, who won the first set and then swiftly won the second.

There have been no casualties in the men’s event, but the opening round is still a day away, so another US Open Lucky Loser might occur.

James Duckworth: replaced Kei Nishikori (Out in 1st round)

Duckwoeth was eliminated from the main draw of the 2023 US Open after a difficult loss to Kazakhstan’s Timofey Skatov. The Australian tennis player was unable to repeat his previous two-round performance.

2014 US Open runner-up Kei Noshikori withdrew after having knee problems. Duckworth took his place and faced the Brazilian Felipe Alves, who won in straight sets.

Arthur Cazaux: replaced Emil Ruusuvuori (Out in 1st round)

The 21-year-old Frenchman came dangerously close to making the first round of the US Open. He appeared to be on his way to the finals after overcoming Zizou Bergs and Shintaro Mochizuki in straight sets. Cazaux won the first set against Italian Stefano Travaglia, but he didn’t anticipate his opponent’s comeback, which turned the score around.

After Emil Ruusuvuori’s withdrawal, Cazaux had the opportunity to face Andrey Rublev. Unfortunately his adventure lasted only three sets, all won by the Russian player.

Liam Broady

The seasoned 29-year-old was one of the favorites to advance from the qualifying round to the main draw. However, he was not at his best after the first round.

Broady won both of his qualification matches by winning the opening set and then winning the second set. He won the first set in the last round but was unable to complete his victory. To enter the competition, he must now wait for another player to leave.

Federico Coria

The tennis star from Argentina had won his first two bouts in straight sets. Camilo Carabelli and Martin Damm were both unable to deal with Coria, and their fights ended swiftly.

The 30-year-old was unable to defeat Brazilian Felipe Alves in the last round. Despite the fact that the match spanned three sets, Alves won after taking the lead in the third set.
