For those who don’t know, the 2022 US Open begins next week. In fact, at the time of writing, the qualifiers are already underway in Flushing Meadows. And sadly, while the list of confirmed entrants is out there, so too is the list of withdrawals. I’ve been tracking the news regarding US Open 2022 withdrawals recently, and it’s not great news for fans of some high-profile players.
Note that I am referencing the men’s draw here, although there have also been some shocks for the women’s draw too. Of course, nobody wants to witness withdrawals from major events. These Grand Slam tournaments are the events that players work hard to compete in all year round. So it is hard to see that they cannot compete when the time comes.
Putting that aside, you are no doubt wondering who these shock withdrawals for the 2022 US Open are. And believe me, there are some big names that have dropped out. This is all discussed below.
Surprise Withdrawals From the US Open 2022

News has broken in recent days regarding three high-profile withdrawals from the US Open – scheduled to start next week in New York. I for one was pretty surprised to see a couple of these guys withdraw from the event. And I am sure that many of you will share the same opinion. So without further ado, let me give you the scoop on these withdrawals.
Reilly Opelka
The first important withdrawal to mention here is Reilly Opelka. The highly ranked American has decided not to compete in the 2022 US Open. But interestingly, he hasn’t provided any specifics to the media to justify his decision. Sure, he has missed the last few events on tour, including recent Masters events during the build-up to the final slam of the year. However, we can assume that Opelka has withdrawn due to a combination of niggling injuries and poor form.
Of course, players are more reluctant to play through an injury if they are also enduring a string of losses.
Gael Monfils
Monfils hasn’t exactly had a smooth season when it comes to consistent play and staying injury free. But he was starting to show signs of his former self during recent tournaments. This was particularly evident when playing at the Montreal Masters. However, this was also the event where he retired against Jack Draper in rather dramatic fashion. I know that Monfils has been struggling with an injury to his heel over the last 12-18 months.
But the talented Frenchman has announced that his injury is too severe to justify competing at the US Open.
Alex Zverev
The final guy to announce his withdrawal from the tournament is Alex Zverev. We all remember the gruesome end to his semi-final with Rafael Nadal at the French Open this year. But fans were hopeful that he might be fit for the US Open following surgery and extensive rehabilitation. However, while Zverev has made a return to the practice court, his injury has not recovered enough for an appearance in New York.
