Frances Tiafoe Australian Open 2023 Odds
Frances Tiafoe is without question one of the most entertaining guys on the ATP Tour. But not only is he entertaining, he is also ridiculously talented. This is reflected by his ranking of number 17 at the moment, which makes him the 2nd highest-ranked American. The only man ahead of him is Taylor Fritz, who is also a great player.
As for Tiafoe’s chances of lifting the trophy in Melbourne, here are his outright odds:
Clearly, Tiafoe isn’t down as a heavy favourite according to the bookies. That’s because he hasn’t always performed great at the Australian Open. In fact, it’s been normal for Tiafoe to lose in the first round or two throughout his career. Yet his recent improvements combined with his current form could make him a threat this year.
For the second time in his career, Frances Tiafoe reaches the third round of this Grand Slam, his second-best performance so far, behind only his Australian Open results in 2019.
Next match – France Australian Open 2023
In the third round, the American tennis player will have a difficult Australian Open draw, as he faces Karen Khachanov, a player he has never been able to defeat. Twice they met at Wimbledon, and both times the winner was the Russian player. The first time they went to five sets, and the second time Khachanov won in straight sets.
Tiafoe’s first match against Altmaier generated some doubts, as he needed 4 sets to win. Khachanov also had problems winning his last match. We expect this to be an evenly matched and exciting duel, so we have analysed each athlete and have tips and predictions for Karen Khachanov vs Frances Tiafoe matchup.
Previous Result – Frances Tiafoe Australian Open 2023
The American tennis player reached the third round of the Australian Open 2023 after defeating Juncheng Shang in a duel that was much easier than predicted. This duel was much more accessible, even than the first round, in which he defeated Altmaier.
In both the first and second sets, Frances Tiafoe only needed to convert one break point in each to take both sets. The difference could have been bigger but Shang avoided losing more serves. In the last set, the Chinese tennis player dropped his performance, so Frances took advantage to convert 3 more breakpoints.
R2: Shang vs Tiafoe 4-6, 4-6, 1-6
R1: Altmaier vs Tiafoe 3-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-7
Frances Tiafoe Last Five Games in 2023
When looking at the last five matches for a player before the Australian Open, sometimes, the games date back to last season. That’s because some players choose to play just one tournament before the first slam of the year. However, others play quite a bit, which is true of Frances Tiafoe. Check out his last five results here:
- Tiafoe vs Musetti – won – 6-2 (RET)
- Tiafoe vs Zuk – won – 6-3, 6-3
- Tiafoe vs Evans – won – 3-6, 7-5, 6-3
- Tiafoe vs Otte – won – 7-5, 6-4
- Tiafoe vs Machac – won – 6-3, 2-4 (RET)
Just for clarification, the two games showing ‘RET’ indicate that Tiafoe’s opponent withdrew from the match due to injury. That’s unfortunate, but these two games still get recorded as wins for the American. And on a promising note, four of these five wins came against guys ranked inside the top 100. As you can also see, Tiafoe has lost just one set in his last five games.
So he’s obviously not in the mood for messing around out there on the court.
Tiafoe Injury update: Nothing reported
It’s been a little over a week since Tiafoe was competing in the United Cup for the USA. During that event, Tiafoe looked fine from a physical point of view. He didn’t look to be nursing any injuries, and he didn’t require the trainer in any of his matches. Sure, he’s taken a break since the United Cup, but this hasn’t been done because of injury concerns.
He simply felt good enough with his game that he didn’t want to compete in any other Australian Open warm-up events.
Australian Open – Frances Tiafoe Past Performances
Frances Tiafoe has played in the main draw of the Australian Open a total of six times. In fact, he has competed in every Australian Open main draw since 2017, so he’s clearly been consistent. However, while he has been consistent, he hasn’t torn things up on the courts of Melbourne Park. In fact, he has only made it into the second week of this tournament on one occasion. This was achieved in 2019 when Tiafoe posted his personal best by reaching the quarter-finals of the event.
He hasn’t matched this achievement on any other occasion. And if you rewind to his debut in 2016, he lost in the second round of qualifying. Note that this doesn’t go down on his Australian Open record since he didn’t actually make the main draw. Taking this into account, when you look at his success in the Australian Open from a win/loss point of view, he has 7 wins vs 6 losses in Melbourne.
This puts his winning percentage marginally above 50%. Interestingly, this makes the Australian Open his second-worst slam in terms of total wins and overall percentages. The only slam where he has performed worse is the French Open, although his game clearly isn’t built for clay. Therefore, Tiafoe will certainly be hoping to transform his track record at the Australian Open this year.
Tiafoe Australian Open 2023 Prediction – 4th round or quarters
When assessing how far a player might go in any tournament, the draw is a critical part of the ultimate predictions given. On that note, Tiafoe has a nice couple of opening rounds. He should win both of his openers comfortably, therefore working his way into the tournament nicely. Things then get tricky in the 3rd round, however, as he will take on the big-hitting Russian, Karen Khachanov. As it happens, Tiafoe has never beaten Khachanov.
In fact, he has lost to Khachanov in both of their previous meetings. Although these were both played on the grass courts of Wimbledon, which tend to suit Khachanov’s game more than Tiafoe’s. And based on recent form, we believe that Tiafoe has the tools to beat Khachanov in this one. If he did, this would set up a clash with the top seed, Rafael Nadal.
The odds will no doubt favour Nadal in this match, but Tiafoe did beat Nadal in their most recent match at the 2022 US Open. So it’s not unrealistic at all to think that Tiafoe can beat Nadal in this match. If he did, he would then play against Medvedev if the seeding went to plan. And that’s where we think Tiafoe will likely lose if he does make it to the quarters.
