Race to Turin 2022 – What Tournaments Are Left?

With only a few weeks remaining until the 2022 End of Year Masters, the action is hotting up. In case you needed a refresher, five guys have already qualified for this event. These guys include Djokovic, Nadal, Ruud, Alcaraz, and Tsitsipas, yet there are three other spots that haven’t been claimed. That’s because we do not yet know for certain whether a few guys have enough points to seal their place. In contrast, the fact that five guys have already qualified means that their points are enough to be involved in Turin 2022.

The one and only exception is Novak Djokovic, who is currently 10th in the Pepperstone Race to Turin Rankings. He has qualified under what’s known as the ‘Grand Slam rule’, even though he isn’t in the top 8 in the rankings. This has made it even tougher for guys who are currently between 5th and 15th in the race. These are the spots where players still have a shot at qualification, but Djokovic has swiped one spot away due to this rule.

Nitto ATP Finals 2022

Anyway, without getting too much off track here, I wanted to take a moment to discuss the remaining tournaments prior to Turin 2022. Despite the End of Year Masters being just weeks away, there are still many tournaments to be played. And for the guys that haven’t yet qualified, these tournaments are immensely important. So let’s take a quick look at them right now.

Remaining Tournaments Before 2022 Nitto ATP Finals in Turin

Since I am writing this on October 18th, 2022, we have approximately three weeks before the End of Year Masters. This isn’t a load of time compared to the overall length of the ATP season. Yet for many, these next three weeks are the most critical of their 2022 campaign. Their performances in the next three weeks will determine whether they compete for the end-of-year crown or not – it’s that simple. And here are the events scheduled:

ATP 250 Events

There are a total of three ATP 250 events taking place this week. One of them is in Antwerp, Belgium, which is where Auger-Aliassime and Hurkacz are bidding to qualify for Turin. The other two involve an event in Stockholm, Sweden, and an event in Naples, Italy. Of course, there are 250 points up for grabs in these tournaments.

ATP 500 Events

Moving further up the ladder as we move towards the End of Year Masters, we’ve got two ATP 500 events set for next week. With both of them starting on October 24th, 2022, there is plenty of top tennis going on that week. These tournaments are the Swiss Indoors in Basel and the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.

ATP Masters 1000 Events

The week prior to Turin 2022, we have the last ATP 1000 event of the season. This one is played in Paris, and it is an indoor hardcourt tournament. Of course, this is the most important of the tournaments mentioned as there are 1000 points available. So quite literally, this final tournament could make the difference between qualifying or not qualifying.
