The women’s US Open 2022 is about to begin. And naturally, there are certain players that have a fighting chance of winning the title. My intention here is to identify such players and show you why I believe they are the most likely winners. Some of these players you’d expect to see in contention for the title. But rather than focusing on the main names, I’ve thrown in a couple of outside contenders too. Doing so keeps this look at the possible women’s winners for the 2022 US Open very interesting indeed.
And as a reminder, you can check out the draw for each of these women on the main WTA website. Some have an easier draw than others, but one thing is certain. They all have to win seven matches against top-level competitors if they are to win the 2022 US Open. So who are these players and why do they have a chance at victory? Let me jump into things right now.
Outright Winners for the Women’s US Open 2022
Contents
Some of the players I am about to discuss are heavy favourites to win the 2022 US Open. Others are in the mix, but they have a lesser chance than the big names. And since I’ve included all of the outright odds for each player, you can use these to create an overall picture of that player’s chances of winning the tournament.
Iga Swiatek – 5.00 odds
Swiatek is the favourite to win the US Open. She is the world’s number one, and this makes her the number one seed for the tournament. Of course, Swiatek has also enjoyed one of the best WTA seasons of all time. She put together a 37-match win streak before Cornet beat her at Wimbledon this summer. This streak included the French Open title, as well as two Masters titles on hard courts. So Swiatek is obviously a fantastic hard-court player, which bodes well for her chances at the US Open.
Emma Raducanu – 23.00 odds
Raducanu is the defending champion at the US Open, which should give her plenty of confidence going into the event. But there is a flip side to this coin – she now has pressure to deal with, whereas she had zero pressure in 2021. Raducanu is ranked just outside the world’s top 10 too, and that’s because of how many points she obtained at this event last year. With that said, the reason her outright odds are relatively low is that her form hasn’t been fantastic over the last 12 months.
Elena Rybakina – 21.00 odds
You are probably familiar with the name Rybakina these days. And the reason I say that is because she won the Wimbledon title earlier this summer. Her enormous game carried her over the line against Ons Jabeur in the final. But since Wimbledon didn’t have any ranking points, Rybakina still isn’t even in the world’s top 20. This seems pretty ridiculous for a Grand Slam champion in 2022, but that’s the way it is. And since Wimbledon, she hasn’t torn things up on the WTA Tour, which is why the odds are low.
Ons Jabeur – 23.00 odds
Ons Jabeur goes into the 2022 US Open with confidence, experience, and with relatively little pressure to be honest. Since her fantastic run to the finals at Wimbledon, she hasn’t done much. In fact, she didn’t go beyond the round of 16 stage at either of the Masters events for the hard-court swing. Then again, she is still ranked number 5 in the world, which puts her as the 5th seed for the 2022 US Open. However, Jabeur has not gone beyond the 3rd round in the past at this tournament. But she is a much better player right now than she has ever been.
Carolina Garcia – 17.00 odds
If I was to talk about the possible US Open winners for the women’s draw prior to Cincinnati, I would not be talking about Carolina Garcia. That’s because she hasn’t done much in terms of deep draw runs or tournament victories in 2022. But that all changed when Garcia cleaned up at the Masters event in Cincinnati just last week. Amazingly, Garcia won 8 matches to win the tournament, as she had to come through qualifying. And she also racked up a win over the world number one, Iga Swiatek, back in July. So for me, Garcia is a dark horse to win the title this year.
Petra Kvitova – 34.00 odds
To get an idea of a player’s form going into the 2022 US Open, it’s always a good idea to look at recent tournaments. And it’s hard to get much better than an appearance in a Masters final a week before the Grand Slam begins. That’s precisely what Kvitova has been able to do by reaching the finals in Cincinnati last week. Having watched many of her games, I was impressed with how she was crunching the ball. She was striking winners left right and centre on the hard courts, and I believe she could be a real threat at the US Open.
Of course, Kvitova is also a very experienced player. She has reached the quarter-finals of the US Open twice in the past. And it looks like she is going in there with confidence this year.
Simona Halep – 8.50 odds
The last of the possible winners I wish to discuss is Simona Halep. This player is a two-time Grand Slam champion. And as the number 7 ranked player in the world at the moment, she is obviously one of the best in the draw. Halep has been finding great form throughout 2022 too. This was proven by her semi-final run at Wimbledon, and most recently – her title run in Montreal. So having won one of the two Masters events prior to the 2022 US Open, Halep is going in there as one of the most in-form players.
With 8.50 odds on the table, this puts Halep as the second-favourite to win the title according to the bookies. But historically speaking, the US Open has been her least successful slam. So she will need to overcome a few demons to take this tournament.
