Nuria Parrisaz-Diaz vs Donna Vekic – Match Predictions
Contents
Vekic is on an upward trend on return from injury and she’s getting better with each passing week. Diaz is an unorthodox player that can frustrate her rivals with her resolute defensive shots. Now a closer look at our tennis predictions for this game:
Set Betting: Vekic 2:0
Vekic is an ex-top 20 player, she reached ranking as high as 19 back in 2019, and hard courts are her favourite surface. She’s so low in the world rankings right now mainly due to the fact that for most of 2021 and the first half of 2022 she was injured. Since her return at last year’s French Open though her form had been improving rapidly. She certainly has much more experience in terms of Grand Slams too with this being her 37th compared to Diaz’s only 6 Slam appearances.
Vekic’s aggressive returns combined with Diaz’s very weak second serve makes us believe that the former will have a serious advantage in this matchup that should see her run away with the win.
Set 1 Result: Vekic
Vekic won the first sets of both her matches so far in the 2023 Australian Open in very convincing style. Her main weakness is keeping her concentration for long in matches, but early on she’s usually pretty focused and playing well. This is why we believe she will take an edge at the beginning of this clash.
Nuria Parrisaz-Diaz vs Donna Vekic Preview
After making our Parrisaz-Diaz vs Vekic predictions it’s time to take a closer look at the two players individually as they enter Australian Open 2023:
Nuria Parrisaz-Diaz
Diaz is a late bloomer as she’s already 31-years-old but it was only in 2020 that she finally entered the WTA tour. She has never been higher than 45 in the world rankings and this is only her 6th Grand Slam. She suffered round 1 exits in 4 of the previous 5, but last January again reached round 3 in Australia.
Diaz is a clay-court specialist and very rarely she beats top 100 players on hard surface. Yet, with her stubborn defensive shots and plenty of luck she managed to go past 2 rounds in Melbourne already this year, despite not dominating either of those.
In round 1 Diaz beat the 14th seed Maia 2:0, with crucial for the win the 5 set points she saved in the opening set of the match to eventually triumph in the very long tiebreak. In round 2 she again won 2:0 against Potapova. The result was convincing, but it was Potapova that actually beat herself with huge number of unforced errors.
Donna Vekic
Vekic dropped out of the top 100 after being injured for most of 2021 and the first half of last year. However, once back on the tour she found form soon enough and come October was the dangerous player she was before her shoulder problems.
In October she reached the WTA500 San Diego final on hard courts. On route she beat 4 top 25 players and in the final won the first set before losing 1:2 against the world number 1 Swiatek. All this confirmed that Vekic is truly back and once again ready to compete with the best.
Vekic needed third set tiebreak in the opening round to overcome a qualifier. However, in round 2 she knocked out the number 18 seed Samsonova 6-3, 6-0. This performance was hugely impressive and showed that when the Croat’s first serve is going in and her returns can cause issues she’s almost unstoppable.
