Novak Djokovic – His Relentless Quest for Turin 2022

It would be fair to say that Novak Djokovic hasn’t exactly been helped by the ATP this year. Of course, this all started back in January when he had troubles in Australia. This prevented him from competing in his most successful Grand Slam, and subsequently, it meant that he lost all of the points from the previous year. In the next Grand Slam, the French Open, he lost yet more points by failing to beat Nadal in the quarter-final. Since he won the French Open in 2021, again, he dropped yet more points.

Then we came to Wimbledon – another tournament where he has enjoyed tremendous success. However, the ATP had decided to strip Wimbledon of any official ATP points. Again, since Novak Djokovic won Wimbledon in 2021, he dropped a further 2,000 points from his total. And for the last slam of the year, the 2022 US Open, he wasn’t able to play due to restrictions in the USA regarding COVID.

Novak Djokovic Turin 2022

Since he made the final of the US Open in 2021, he dropped yet more points. In my opinion, this has to be one of the unluckiest seasons in history concerning his points and subsequent ranking. But believe it or not, Novak Djokovic is still ranked inside the world’s top 10 – number 7 at the moment, to be precise. This is remarkable considering that he lost significant points in 3 out of the 4 Grand Slam events.

And to make matters even more difficult, he was denied from playing in multiple Masters 1000 events due to his vaccination status. But regardless of all of this, he is still in the running to qualify for the end-of-year masters in Turin. Let me take you through his relentless quest right now:

Novak Djokovic Turin 2022 – Still Pursuing the Event

At the time of writing, Novak Djokovic hasn’t officially qualified for Turin 2022. This is still a tall ask for him to make it to the end-of-year masters, but it isn’t an impossibility. And that’s because he has still picked up important points despite being denied a boatload of points in the slams. Here is the story:

ATP Masters 1000 Success

Besides the four Grand Slam tournaments, it is the Masters 1000 events that carry the most points. And Djokovic has picked up points in two of these events in 2022. The first came in Madrid when Djokovic made the semi-finals, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz. But since he didn’t compete in Madrid in 2021, he gained a load of points here. Djokovic then won the Rome Masters, picking up more points by beating his finals appearance the previous year.

Success at the 250 and 500 Level

Novak Djokovic usually wouldn’t compete in ATP 250 or 500 events, but he has been forced to do so in 2022. The most recent tournament success for 2022 came in Tel Aviv just last week, where Djokovic won this 250-event. And currently, he is in the semi-finals of the Astana Open – an ATP 500 event where he could pick up yet more points. So really, he still has a fighting chance of securing a spot in Turin.
