Some would say that the tennis world is boring without him, and others are bored with his antics, but one thing is certain – Nick Kyrgios is one of the most interesting figures in men’s tennis today. Unfortunately for Nick, usually not because of his results but instead mostly because of his behavior.

So, it’s no wonder that many people are eager to know when Nick Kyrgios will play his next match, especially after Australia spent the majority of the 2023 season so far on the sidelines with a tear in his meniscus. However, things are going in the right direction for Kyrgios as he returns to the court, but what is his upcoming schedule?

The 2023 campaign was slated for a change of guard. Carlos Alcaraz was emerging and the likes of Nick Kyrgios and Daniil Medvedev were supposed to take centre stage. Carlitos and Megamind came into limelight but were outshone by Novak Djokovic. As for Nick, he was resigned to the sidelines with injury issues.

The 2024 Australian Open was supposed to mark his return but the rehabilitation has not gone according to plans. The Aussie ace only played once in 2023, a straight-set defeat to Ybing Wu in Stuttgart. There is no date for his return but the anticipation only grows as Kyrgion continues to make controversial statements in the media.

When and where will Kyrgios play next?

Less than 24 hours before his match should have been played, Kyrgios announced that he is withdrawing from Wimbledon.

Earlier on Sunday, Kyrgios spoke with reporters saying that he is fit and ready to play but hours later he released a statement on Instagram.

“I’m really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year,” he wrote. “I tried my hardest to be ready after my surgery and to be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again. During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during the week of Mallorca. As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist.

“I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn’t have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon — I’ll be back.”

The Australian was set as the 30th seed in the tournament and should have faced wildcard David Goffin in the opening round. The 32-year-old Belgian is currently ranked 132nd in the world, and his career high is No. 7.

Kyrgios had one of the best moments of his career in Wimbledon. He was the breakthrough star in 2014 when he defeated Rafael Nadal in the round of 16. Last year, The Australian made it to the first Grand Slam final of his career, losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets.

Nick Kyrgios’ 2023 campaign

The 2023 season so far hasn’t been a great one for Nick Kyrgios. As we already mentioned, he was dealing with an injury from the very start of the season, a meniscus tear, which forced him to withdraw from both majors played until now – the Australian Open and the French Open. Kyrgios also missed all the other big tournaments in 2023, like Miami Open, Indian Wells, Madrid Open, and Italian Open.

On the bright side, Kyrgios is finally back on the court. He announced his return ahead of the Stuttgart Open, where he was scheduled to play against Yibing Wu at the start. The Chinese player emerged victorious from that match, and it was evident that Nick would need more time to get back into good form as he lost without too much fight, 2-0 (7-5, 6-3).

So, his only match in 2023 was a surprising loss to a player ranked 64th in the ATP list, but that is understandable given the long break that Kyrgios had due to the injury, as Nick admitted himself on Twitter:

Current ATP ranking – where is Kyrgios on the ATP list?

Kyrgios is currently in the 33rd place in the ATP rankings, so his ranking didn’t really suffer that much due to his long-term absence, given that the Australian finished the last season in the 22nd place in the world.

Obviously, the injury probably kept him from getting into the Top 20 or maybe even Top 10, and if he doesn’t get back in form for the grass season, he could lose a lot of points given that he reached the semi-finals in Halle and the big final at Wimbledon.

What’s next for Kyrgios after Wimbledon?

After the Wimbledon withdrawal, it is uncertain when Kyrgios will be back on the court. He will probably take another month off and return in some of the tournaments before the US Open.
