We all know how talented Lorenzo Musetti is. Yet at this point in his career, his level does seem to fluctuate quite considerably from event to event. With that said, I’ve been watching him in the last two matches in Florence, and it seems like he is playing fantastic tennis once again. Whether it’s the home soil or simply coincidence, the fact remains that Musetti has a real chance of grabbing his second ATP title in Florence, Italy.
The 20-year-old Italian has made it to the semi-finals at the time of writing. And tonight, he is due to take on the equally promising Canadian – Felix Auger-Aliassime. It will take another fantastic performance to beat Auger-Aliassime tonight, especially with the tournament being held on an indoor hard court. With that said, Musetti has a 2-1 head-to-head record against the Canadian.
Not only this, but the two wins came in their most recent two meetings. The problem is that both of these wins were on a clay court, which Musetti tends to prefer over hard. And since the other match that they played was also on clay, back in April 2021 in Barcelona, this means that they’ve never played on a hard court before.
So tonight will be a big test for Musetti. But can he actually squeeze past Auger-Aliassime and win his next match to grab the title in Florence? Find out here.
Musetti’s Chances in Florence – Reasonable and Fully Possible
Contents
Lorenzo Musetti is currently ranked 28th in the ATP rankings. Bear in mind that he is still just 20 years of age too, so he is one of the most promising talents on tour at the moment. And in my humble opinion, I do believe that he has a decent chance of winning the tournament in Florence. Here is a breakdown:
Match Against Auger-Aliassime
Although Auger-Aliassime is obviously getting better all the time, I feel that he is still a little erratic. Sure, he has a big serve and a heavy forehand when it lands. However, the backhand is still a weakness, and sometimes, I doubt his choice of shots and tactics on court. In contrast, one of Musetti’s strengths is his ability to make plenty of balls in court and make it uncomfortable for his opponent.
He also has a great slice backhand which stays very low, especially on hard courts. And if he can get that working while making plenty of balls, I can see him beating Auger-Aliassime tonight.
Final Against either J.J. Wolf or Ymer
Should Musetti get beyond Auger-Aliassime, which he can do, he would then be a heavy favourite for the final. That’s because these guys are significantly lower in the rankings compared to Auger-Aliassime. In fact, J.J. Wolf is 75 in the rankings, and Ymer is 99 in the ATP rankings. So they clearly haven’t had plenty of experience in semis or finals of ATP tournaments, which puts Musetti at an advantage.
The only variable is how much the game against Auger-Aliassime takes out of him if he is to indeed make it to the final.
