Marta Kotsyuk and the #28 seed Amanda Anisimova face off in the opening day of the 2023 Australian Open women’s singles tournament. Keep an eye out, as this match could very well lead to a first round upset. Take a look at our preview and betting predictions for the match.

These odds from Ladbrokes were correct at the time of writing.

Marta Kostyuk vs Amanda Anisimova – Match Predictions

This is a very interesting day 1 match. With Anisimova having just returned from a broken toe and Kostyuk in decent form, we could very well be looking at a classic day 1 upset scenario.

Marta Kostyuk to Win

Kostyuk had a decent start to her 2023 season. After fighting her way the qualifiers, the Ukrainian made it to the quarterfinals in Adelaide, losing to the #1 seed Ons Jabeur. Anisimova, on the other hand, is back after a four-month absence. The American suffered a first round exit at Adelaide, and is still trying to regain her form.

Despite their difference in ranking, Kostyuk enters the match carrying better momentum. We are backing the upset for this one.

Total 3 Sets

Kostyuk’s two wins at the Adelaide International went the distance. The Ukrainian sent Jaimee Fourlis in a three-setter, then came back from a one-set deficit to upset Elena Rybakina in three. Kostyuk knocked out the #32 seed, Sara Sorribes Tormo, in the second round during last year’s Australian Open.

While Anisimova hasn’t returned to form yet, we can expect the American to put up a fight. Let’s not forget that Anisimova plays an aggressive, high-risk game and therefore is bound to hit some winners.

Marta Kostyuk vs Amanda Anisimova Preview

With the predictions already explained, let’s take a brief look at our two competitors entering the first day of competition.

Marta Kostyuk

A former junior tennis star, Kostyuk won the girl’s singles title in Melbourne six years ago. The 20-year old Ukrainian had a breakout year in 2021, entering the top 50 for the first time.

She got off to an incredible start in 2022, reaching the Australian Open third round and looking set to climb up the WTA rankings. But she never really took off, with her best result being a semifinals appearance in Cincinnati. Kostyuk enters the first slam of the year as the #59 in the WTA ranking and determined to reclaim her spot in the top 50. Matching her Australian Open result from a year ago is a realistic goal.

Amanda Anisimova

One of the most promising players from the new generation, Anisimova made her name known in 2019. The then 18-year old reached the French Open semis after defeating Simona Halep in the quarterfinals. She also won her maiden WTA Tour title that year, and looked set to fight for the top 10 after closing out the year as #24.

But as it’s often the case for younger players, Anisimova suffered an enormous drop in form the following years. After a string of first round exits, the young American dropped to #78 in the WTA rankings.

She managed to turn things around in 2022, climbing back to #28 and winning her second career title. A broken toe suffered before the U.S. Open, however, brought her season to an early end. Expect Anisimova to struggle in these first few months as she returns to form following the long absence.

Kostyuk vs Anisimova Head to Head

The two players have only met once as pros, in the 2019 Madrid Open. Kostyuk won the match in three sets.
