Youth meets experience as Leylah Fernandez takes on Alize Cornet in the first round of the 2023 Australian Open. Fernandez, who reached the US Open final in 2021, will be looking to break her duck at the Australian Open after losing in the first round in all four of her previous appearances at the tournament. Cornet, on the other hand, will be hoping that she can make another run to the quarter-finals like she did last year.

Leylah Fernandez vs Alize Cornet – Match Prediction
Contents
While there are many first-round ties at this year’s Australian Open that look one-sided, this one looks set to be a close affair. Let’s take a look at our predictions in greater detail.
Leylah Fernandez To Win
20-year-old Fernandez has been on the “one to watch” list for many tennis fans ever since her incredible run to the US Open final in 2021 as a teenager. Both Fernandez and the winner that day, Emma Raducanu, suffered a little last season with the expectation on them both but we are backing her to just edge out Cornet in Melbourne. Her preparation for the tournament has been better than her opponents after reaching the quarter-finals in Aukland last week.
Total sets – three
Despite Fernandez being the better player in better form, the experience of Cornet should mean that the 32-year-old at least wins a set. The Frenchwoman enjoys playing in Melbourne and is more than good enough to make this close. In the big points, expect Cornet to come out on top.

Leylah Fernandez vs Alize Cornet Preview
Both players are at opposite ends of their careers. Let’s get to know each one a little better.
Leylah Fernandez
In August 2022, Fernandez reached a career-high of number 13 in the WTA rankings, however, after a disappointing end to the season she now finds herself ranked 40th in the world. Last week, though, in her first tournament of the year she cruised through to the quarter-finals dropping just three games in the process. Despite coming unstuck against Ysaline Bonaventure, she comes into the Australian Open with her game in good shape. Although she’s unlikely to reach the latter stages, she will be hopeful of at least making it to the second week.
Alize Cornet
Alize Cornet has been a steady and competitive player throughout her career. Like Fernandez, she burst onto the scene and was ranked number 11 in the world at the age of 18. She has perhaps failed to live up to fulfil her potential but has still carved out a solid career. Now on the wrong side of 30, there will only be a limited amount of grand slam opportunities left for her so she won’t have been best pleased with the draw she’s been given.
Fernandez vs Cornet Head to Head
Fernandez and Cornet have only ever played each other once before with the Candian coming out on top in their encounter at Indian Wells in 2021. The victory was fairly routine with the 20-year-old winning 6-2, 6-3.
