This year’s Laver Cup features a team that is keen to chip away at the lead that its opponent has built up in prior competitions. I’m referring to Team Europe, which had been winning the Laver Cup for the first four years. Each year, the team that the European team put on display was unquestionably better than the one that the World team was able to assemble. This year was different since the red team had more elite players than the blue team for the first time. The difference was visible on the court as well as in the numbers.

Laver Cup day 3 results

After day two’s results, which saw three victories for Team World and just one for Team Europe, the red team was up 10-2. Every game on this final day was a final because Team World only needed one victory to win their second Laver Cup championship because winning on day three nets you three points and winning on day three nets you thirteen points.

Match 9 – Shelton/Tiafoe beat Hurkacz/Rublev 7-6 7-6

Both teams entered this match with distinct goals that were also very apparent, yet they did so in the same manner. Hubert Hurkacz and Andrey Rublev were driven by the desire to start a significant comeback in the title contest. The European team was also under pressure because they knew that a loss would give the championship to their competitors right away.

The American team of Shelton and Tiafoe were a touch more at ease but still had the same drive to succeed in order to preserve a title they were already in the process of gaining. It was an even more memorable occasion for Tiafoe because Team World’s inaugural Laver Cup was made possible by his victory in the previous competition.

From the moment the first serve was served, both pairs made it clear that they were not going to give each other any time. Both Team World and Team Europe remained solid on each of their serves.

Only in the first set, we saw Hubert Hurkacz and Andrey Rublev have double break point opportunities, but they failed to convert them, something they would later regret.

As I mentioned before, each team’s serve was successful, forcing both sets into a tiebreak. Again, neither couple was willing to concede, thus the game was played until its conclusion.

The set was determined the same way in both the first and second sets. After a protracted match, Hubert Hurkacz became uneasy after Ben Shelton’s shot, and in an effort to get the ball back, he slammed it into the goal, handing Team Europe the set both times.
