Khachanov vs Murray – match predictions

Of the many tennis predictions today that we’ve issued for the Cincinnati Open, this is perhaps the most interesting of the bunch. I say this because the match could be a fascinating encounter, and it could go either way, in my opinion. Of course, I’ve taken numerous factors into account before issuing any Murray vs Khachanov predictions. For example, recent injuries, matches, and style of play have all been important in the suggestions for this one.

And after my assessment of such factors, I’ve come up with the following tips:

Murray to win a set – yes

There might be almost a decade between these two in the age department, but Murray is still going for a reason. He’s a true battler, and given his style of play, he could frustrate Khachanov and snag a set. Furthermore, he was playing top tennis in Toronto last week, whereas Khachanov withdrew through injury.

Over 22.5 games

Although Murray could well win this one, I can’t see Khachanov making it easy. In fact, due to his serve and power off the ground, if Khachanov gets an early break in any set he could go on to take it. At the same time, Murray is a great returner, which suggests that this one could go over 22.5 games.

Khachanov vs Murray preview

Ahead of the second installment of the Khachanov vs Murray series, let me take you through a brief preview of each player.

Karen Khachanov preview

Khachanov is one of the biggest hitters on tour, especially on the forehand side. Then again, he’s 6’6” tall with a big serve, so this is to be expected. Furthermore, he is number 11 in the ATP rankings right now, so he’s on the cusp of the top 10, which is significant. But with that said, he’s been nursing an injury since the French Open.

Andy Murray preview

Andy Murray had a great showing in Canada last week. He played two great matches against Sonego and Purcell before he withdrew before taking on Jannik Sinner. This is something to keep in mind, as it’s not certain that Murray is 100% fit. If he was, I would probably go for a Murray victory, but this question mark has prompted the more conservative tips listed above.

Khachanov vs Murray head to head

You’d have thought that Murray and Khachanov would have clashed quite a few times on the ATP Tour. But that’s not actually the case. In fact, they’ve only played each other once on outdoor clay, and this match was at the 2017 French Open. Murray won this match in straight sets, but given that it’s so long ago, I don’t feel that the 1-0 head-to-head for Murray holds much weight here.
