The Dallas Open preview we put together prior to this 250 event revealed many top seeds and potential threats. And now, two of the seeded players are about to face off in the quarter-finals. As you can see, it’s the Aussie, Jordan Thompson, taking on the American, Ben Shelton, tonight, and I’ve shared my tips for this match here.

Whenever we come up with tennis predictions today, we always look for markets with ‘value’. That means that we never just shoot for the obvious choice, which often has poor odds anyway! Of course, the obvious choice would be to back Ben Shelton to win, but the odds just aren’t worth it.
Therefore, where exactly does the value lie for this match? Let me show you.
Shelton to win 2-0 @ 23/20 (2.15)
I said that it wasn’t worth backing Ben Shelton to simply win this match, as the odds just aren’t appealing enough. But this doesn’t mean that betting on Shelton to win the match in a specific way doesn’t have value! To that end, I believe Shelton could take out the Aussie in straight sets tonight, and the odds for this market are very enticing.
Shelton -2.5 games handicap @ 5/6 (1.83)
One of the main reasons I believe that Shelton will win 2-0 is because of his phenomenal serving record against Mmoh in the previous round. If he comes even close to that again, I’d expect him to score a winning margin of more than 3 games against Thompson. Of course, the odds are worth it for this market too.
Jordan Thompson vs Ben Shelton odds
With Shelton’s moneyline odds, his chance of winning is 71.40%. As for Thompson’s probability of victory, this is just 37.00%.
Home favourite to advance into semi-finals, or will the Aussie cause an upset?
Shelton is the higher seed in this match, and many signs point to a victory for the American. However, to give both a fair shake, I’ve provided a quick preview below.
Jordan Thompson preview
Thompson has enjoyed a successful 2024 season so far. He took out Nadal in Brisbane, and he played well in the Aussie Open too. As for his run in the Dallas Open so far, he’s earned wins against two Americans – one wildcard and one lucky loser. And he’s yet to drop a set.
Ben Shelton preview
Because he is the number 3 seed in this tournament, Shelton didn’t have to play in round one. He went straight to round two, which is where he comfortably beat a fellow American, Michael Mmoh. Additionally, he has beaten Thompson in their one and only meeting in 2022, so I’m sure he will feel confident going into this quarter-final clash.
Thompson vs Shelton head to head
The one and only time these guys faced off was in 2022 in Chicago, and Shelton came out on top with a straight set victory.
