After overcoming Tommy Paul in the first round, John Isner will face an opponent from his own country for the second time in a row. Alex Miechelsen, 18, also knocked off a fellow countryman in the previous round, therefore regardless of the outcome, an American will play in the Newport Open final.

First Set: Over 10.5 Games
One of the oddities between these optimists is that Isner is only twice Michelsen’s age, but they both share the fact that they are not in the top 100. Furthermore, both have played a total of 5 hours and 54 minutes on the court.
Despite the age difference, Alex has demonstrated a high level of performance, thus this battle will be quite even. Isner struggled to convert break points in the previous match but defended admirably, thus the opening set is expected to go 7-5 or 7-6.
Isner to Win
The 38-year-old veteran held his nerve against one of the best American tennis players of the moment, Tommy Paul. That match will be a motivation for him to try to be a 2023 Newport Open finalist.
Michelsen has played just 10 matches on grass, while Isner has more than 50 victories on this surface. I think experience will prevail in this semi-final, so my prediction is that John will win.

John Isner
For the first time in the tournament, Isner was down a set after losing a serve in his final encounter against Tommy Paul. In the second set, John improved and won after converting a break point.
We had a tremendous tussle in the last set after Isner converted a break point, but Tommy Paul promptly answered by converting another. That last set went to a tiebreak, which Isner won with to his experience.
Alex Michelsen
Michelsen has had an outstanding season, reaching five finals. He has competed in 16 tournaments this year, 13 of which were Challengers. He had only played the qualifying round of Indian Wells and the opening round of the Mallorca Open in big tournaments.
Despite the absence of matches against top players, Alex demonstrated the excellent speed of play that he has gained this year. In the previous match, he completely outplayed Mackenzie McDonald. Michelsen converted four break points while his opponent only converted one. 6-3 6-3 was the final result.
Isner vs Michelsen Head to Head
It will be the first time that John Isner and Alex Michelsen meet. One of the advantages of the veteran player is that he has much more experience than his opponent. Isner was already a professional tennis player when Michelsen was not yet born.
The 18-year-old has played a total of 55 matches this season and won 41 of them. John played just 16 matches and won only seven of them, three of them in the current tournament.
