Jessica Pegula vs Marie Bouzkova – Match Predictions

Bouzkova to Win a Set: No

Normally we will give a player that leads the H2H 3-1 a chance to win a set. However, Bouzkova’s form has been pretty dismal for many months now and we don’t think she can do that against the world number 3 Pegula.

Bouzkova hasn’t beaten a top 50 player since last October and she hasn’t beaten a top 20 one since August 2022. The Czech has been struggling for consistency all throughout this calendar year and she exited every major even so far in rounds 1 or 2. All this gives us very little confidence that she will be able to steal a set from Pegula in this matchup.

Set 1 After 2 Games – 1-1

As this will be the first-ever meeting between the two on clay surface we expect that they will both be a bit cautious early in the match. This is why we think after only 2 games the result will be 1-1. All of Pegula’s last 5 matches were 1-1 after 2 games, and so were 3 of Bouzkova’s last 4 games.

Jessica Pegula vs Marie Bouzkova Preview

Our predictions for this match have now been established, let’s see how these players have fared in recent months.

Jessica Pegula

Pegula warmed up for this event with a run to the semi-finals in Charleston, her only clay court appearance so far before Madrid. The American also reached the semifinals of the Miami Masters recently and the final of the Qatar Open where she lost vs the world number 1 Iga Swiatek.

Pegula was solid enough in her first outing in Madrid when she beat the Pole Frech 7-6, 6-3.

Marie Bouzkova

Bouzkova had been in awful form so far in 2023. First-round exits from the Australian Open, Miami, Dubai and several other tournaments forced the Czech to go to the Challengers circuit recently.

In desperate search of form before Madrid Bouzkova entered a Challenger event in Portugal where she won 2 games against players outside the top 300 but then lost in the quarterfinals in straight sets against the world number 78 Danka Kovinic.

Bouzkova was lucky to go past her first test of the 2023 Mutua Madrid Open. She somehow edged Sasnovich 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.

Jessica Pegula vs Marie Bouzkova Head to Head

Bouzkova leads the H2H 3-1,  but the last meeting between the two was over a year ago. During the 2022 Indian Wells Bouzkova won 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 against an injured Pegula. Pegula’s only win in this matchup was during the 2020 US Open, with the first 2 meetings much earlier in both players’ careers. All of those 4 clashes were on hard courts, so this will be their first matchup on clay.
