Now it’s time for the top seeds to get going at the Madrid Open. Here, we have the 8th seed, Hubert Hurkacz going up against Jack Draper. This is the fifth meeting between these two, and Draper has been knocking at the door to beat Hurkacz on clay in the recent past.

That said, here are my predictions for the upcoming match:

Draper to win @ 6/4 (2.50)

In my opinion, the win over Kokkinakis and the fact that Hurkacz isn’t playing great suggests that Draper can win this one. And at those odds, this is almost too good to turn down.

Draper to win a set @ 4/7 (1.57)

If the idea of covering Draper for the win is a little too much to handle, why not cover this second option instead? Remember – Draper lost to Hurkacz 7-6 in the decider in Monte Carlo and he beat the Polish player in straight sets in the match before that. In fact, Draper has won at least one set against Hurkacz every time they’ve played.

Hubert Hurkacz is ranked 9 in the world right now, and he is the 8th seed at the 2024 Madrid Open. That said, it looks like he is significantly better than Draper on paper. But I don’t read too much into those numbers, especially taking the surface into account, as well as their last result at the Monte Carlo Masters. Additionally, Hurkacz went out in the third round of this event last year.

Jack Draper preview

Jack Draper edged past Thanasi Kokkinakis in his Madrid Open first round, and this will give him the confidence to go one better against Hurkacz. It’s always a boost to come through those tight encounters, and Hurkacz hasn’t yet played a match in Madrid. But at 43 in the ATP rankings, Draper isn’t favoured to win, and he will need to pull out all the stops to get the job done.

It doesn’t look too great for Draper with a 3-1 head-to-head deficit against Hurkacz. But there’s plenty of hope, especially since he beat Hurkacz at the 2023 US Open and only lost to him 7-6 in the third in Monte Carlo.
