The second edition of the Guadalajara Open begins with much more fervor. This is no ordinary event, as the winner receives 1000 points. Jessica Pegula became the inaugural champion when she defeated Maria Sakkari in the final. Unfortunately, the American tennis player would not participate in the last days before the start of the event, therefore she will not be the defending champion.

Furthermore, Iga Swiatek will not be competing in the event, which has raised hopes for her to recover the number one spot in the WTA rankings, which she held for 75 weeks. Nonetheless, we will have a bunch of elite seeds that will provide excitement to the competition.

Guadalajara Open order of play – Friday, September 22

It is not an error to see a name repeated among the semifinalists of the Guadalajara Open 2023 in singles and doubles. Caroline Dolehide has easily topped both categories and will be seeking for a spot in the final to double her title.

In singles, the American will compete against her compatriot Sofia Kenin. Dolehide has been the tournament’s strongest player thus far, but Kenin will have difficulty stopping her opponent.

Given the ranking of Caroline Garcia and Maria Sakkari, the other semi-final might lead to an early final. The Greek player wishes to settle the score, as the French player leads the head-to-head series 3-1.

Later in the evening, Dolehide will return with Asia Muhammad to face Storm Hunter of Australia and Elise Mertens of Belgium. The winners of this match will proceed to the doubles finals of the Guadalajara Open. If there is a pair that can halt the clash, the European players start as favorites because they are the top seeds. They are De Dolehide and Muhammad.

On the other end, we’ll see another intriguing match between the third and fourth seeds, Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe. The Australian-Canadian duo is still one step away from another final, and their route has been a little simpler when Jasmine Paolini and Mayar Sherif eliminated the number two seeds.
