Grigor Dimitrov vs Laslo Djere Predictions and Odds: Australian Open

Grigor Dimitrov and Laslo Djere battle on day 4 of the 2023 Australian Open for a place in the third round. Will the Bulgarian advance or can the Serb pull off an upset? Check our predictions and best bets for this match.

Grigor Dimitrov vs Laslo Djere Match Predictions

Dimitrov and Djere had never played against each other before. Despite Dimitrov’s usual inconsistency, it’s difficult to imagine a different result other than a relatively comfortable win for the Bulgarian.

Dimitrov -4.5 Games

This is a relatively safe bet, as it even gives Dimitrov margin for one tie break. The Bulgarian dominated Karatsev on service games, giving up a mere 21 points while posting 86% and 80% win rates on the first and second serve respectively.

If he manages to pull off a similar performance, then covering the handicap will be relatively easy. Again – when it comes to Dimitrov, you never really know what could happen, but the line here is still generous enough to make up for some occasional errors.

Total 3 Sets

Even if Dimitrov ends up making some mistakes over the course of the match, he is most likely going to wrap things up in straight sets – largely because of his advantage on the hard surface. The Bulgarian’s game has always been better suited to faster courts, while Djere is a clay specialist.

The Serb has a dismal 31.1% career win rate on hard and grass courts combined, making Dimitrov the heavy favorite heading into this one. Additionally, Djere had never made it past the first round in Melbourne prior to this year.

Grigor Dimitrov vs Laslo Djere Preview

Having already laid out what we expect from this match, it’s time to take a look at how each player has made it to this round 2 matchup.

Grigor Dimitrov

Dimitrov’s nagging shoulder problems have stopped him from taking the big leap most people expected. His best result in Melbourne came in 2017, a semifinal bid that ended in a five-set thriller versus Rafael Nadal. The Bulgarian has since made to the Australian Open quarterfinals twice, but didn’t advance on either occasion.

Dimitrov is now almost five years removed from his last ATP Tour final. The Bulgarian has played three matches in 2023 so far, scoring one win and one loss in the inaugural edition of the United Cup before dispatching Karatsev at the Australian Open.

Laslo Djere

The Serb had been on a downward trajectory since his breakout in 2019, but Djere is coming off some significant achievements. In 2022, the 27-year old finished as the runner-up at the Winston-Salem Open – his first final on the hard surface at the ATP Tour level. Earlier this year, Djere scored his first win over a top 5 opponent, defeating Casper Ruud at the Maharashtra Open.

Djere beat Zizou Bergs in four sets in order to advance to the second round. It also marked the Serb’s first career win at the Australian Open, as his previous five appearances all ended in first round exits.

Dimitrov vs Djere Head to Head

Dimitrov and Djere had never gone head to head at the ATP Tour level before.
