The 27th seed, Grigor Dimitrov, is about to take on the powerful Russian, Aslan Karatsev, in the first round of the Australian Open. Check out my predictions for this match below:

Dimitrov vs Karatsev – Match Predictions

It was two years ago when Aslan Karatsev went from being a relative nobody to a household name on the ATP Tour. As you might recall, he made the semi-finals of the 2021 Australian Open out of nowhere – beating Dimitrov in the quarter-finals, as it happens. Interestingly, this equalled the best performance at the Australian Open by Grigor Dimitrov too. The 27th seed this year actually made the semi-finals at this event back in 2017. 

So clearly, both of these guys have what it takes to go deep at a Grand Slam, particularly in Melbourne. And when you look at things like recent form, performances on hard courts in general, as well as the head-to-head, this one is pretty tough to call. With that said, I’ve still come up with two tennis predictions today for this match which you can read through below:

Dimitrov To Win

Although things may seem equal regarding the head-to-head and game styles, I’m still shooting for a Dimitrov win. I just feel he has an advantage in terms of experience at this level. Dimitrov has also been enjoying better form than Karatsev if you look back through his last few tournaments too. Of course, this is reflected in his ranking of 28.

Karatsev To Win A Set – Yes

While I think that Dimitrov will win this match, it’s certainly possible for Karatsev to grab a set. He has a big serve and a huge game in general. These are the kinds of weapons that are more than enough to take a set against the best in the world. Furthermore, Karatsev has won at least one set in both of their previous meetings.

At this point in his career, Grigor Dimitrov is one of the veterans. He is 31 years of age, and he has been involved in the Australian Open ever since 2010. During this time, he has made the quarter-finals on three separate occasions. He’s also made the semi-final in 2017 too, and he has only ever lost in the first round one time in Melbourne.

Aslan Karatsev Preview

Prior to 2021, Aslan Karatsev was playing mostly Challenger tournaments. He was far off the pace and form required to compete for big tournaments on the ATP Tour. But that run at the 2021 Australian Open really did transform his entire image and his career. Yet things have been a bit up and down throughout 2022, hence his current ranking of 82.

Dimitrov vs Karatsev Head to Head

These guys have played twice previously. Karatsev won their first meeting at the 2021 Australian Open in four sets. Yet Dimitrov won the most recent meeting in San Diego, which was also in 2021. This makes the head-to-head an even split of 1:1.
