Gauff Miami Open 2023: Can the teenager win her second event of 2023?

Coco Gauff is still only 19 years old but it feels like she has now been playing on the WTA Tour for a lifetime. The American made a phenomenal start to 2023, winning the WTA Auckland Open at the start of January. Since then, however, she has flattered to deceive at times and will be disappointed by her performances at the Australian Open and Indian Wells last week.

Coco Gauff Miami Open 2023 Odds

Coco Gauff is priced at 18/1 with a number of bookmakers to win the Miami Open. While these odds may seem fairly long, she is the sixth favourite to pick up the trophy at the end of the week. Considering the calibre of women above her in the rankings, including Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula, these odds seem fair.

Coco Gauff’s recent form

Coco Gauff will be disappointed with how her Indian Wells campaign finished. She made it through to the quarter-finals relatively comfortably, only dropping one set along the way, however, she was then obliterated by Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-0. It’s these types of results that can knock a player’s confidence, particularly one as young as Gauff.

It’s hard to call the loss to Sabalenka a freak result, either. She is beginning to make a habit of losing to other top players which can have a lasting mental impact on a player. She will be desperate to make it far enough to play another top seed and put things right in Miami.

Upcoming match vs Potapova

After beating Canadian, Rebecca Marino, in her second-round match in Miami, Gauff has a match with Anastasia Potapova to look forward to. The winner of that tie will progress through the last 16 of the tournament which is where things start to get a little bit more serious.

Gauff is the favourite to win the match and is priced at 7/20 with Ladbrokes. However, as Potatpova is also a seed, it is going to be an easy match for the young American. The last time they faced each other, Potapova retired injured with Gauff 5-0 up in the opening set.

Can Coco Gauff win the Miami Open?

Predicting tennis outcomes is never a straightforward task due to how competitive the sport currently is, particularly on the women’s tour. However, we don’t believe that Coco Gauff can win the Miami Open at this stage of his career. While she has proven she can win tournaments in the past, she is yet to go beyond the semi-finals of a WTA 1000 event and we can’t see her breaking her duck here.

The reality is, at 19-year-old she has done remarkably well to position herself as an established top-ten player. In time, this woman will be winning WTA 1000 events and grand slams, but for now, we think it’s just out of reach.

Coco Gauff Miami Open 2023 Prediction – quarter-finals

We think Coco Gauff will do what she does best and blow away lesser opponents before becoming unstuck against someone ranked above her. We don’t envisage anyone in the opening rounds being an issue for Gauff but she is due to face fellow American, Jessica Pegula, in the quarter-finals which is going to be problematic for the teenager.

The pair play doubles together so know each other’s games well. Pegula is currently the world number three, and although she isn’t firing on all cylinders, her experience will likely see her through a match-up against Gauff. The last time the pair played each other, Pegula came out on top 6-4, 6-4 on a hard court in Dubai.
