Despite not reaching the equalling his 2022 US Open feat, Frances impressed in his quarter-final run in the 2023 edition. However, since his 3-1 dismantling by Ben Shelton, Tiafoe has yet to register a victory. He could not stop Borna Gojo or Tallon Griekspoor as part of Team USA.
The results of the Davis Cup should not take anything from Tiafoe, who gave a fighting account of his abilities. His one tiebreaker win from three opportunities eventually cost him his downfall. The American will hope for better fortunes as he prepares to participate in the Laver Cup. He defeated Novak Djokovic last time around and will hope to use the stage to get back to winning ways.
Frances Tiafoe’s next match – Laver Cup vs Andrey Rublev / Arthur Fils
In his first forays in the Laver Cup, Tiafoe will partner with Tommy Paul. The duo are coming together after Cincinnati 2022 and will hope they manage to avoid a first-round match defeat this time. Their partnership has not been a prolific one with four defeats from six outings.
Despite this, they will fancy their chances against Andriy Rublev and Arthur Fils in this encounter. The European pair will be playing together for the first time and their team chemistry will be put to test by the American duo. The match will feature three of the ATP top 15 and a NextGen hopefully which makes for an exciting viewing for fans and neutrals alike.
Frances Tiafoe’s 2023 campaign so far
The 2023 season saw Frances Tiafoe becoming only the 3rd black player in tennis history to enter the world’s top 10. He did that in April after reaching his first-ever ATP 1000 semifinal at Indian Wells.
Tiafoe also won 2 of his 3 ATP titles this year and he is the one of only two players to have won a title both on clay and on grass so far in 2023. Tiafoe lifted the trophy in Houston and most recently warmed up for Wimbledon with a grass-court triumph in Stuttgart.
Tiafoe’s year started great with his triumph at the 2023 United Cup as a member of the US national team that triumphed in the final against defending champions Italy. He won all of his 5 matches during the United Cup. Then a 3rd round exit from the Australian Open followed, with Tiafoe disappointed not to have done better.
The result kept improving though and in March Tiafoe reached his first-ever ATP 1000 semifinal at Indian Wells. This saw Tiafoe enter the world’s top 10 in April and the American has stayed a top-10 player ever since.
In April, he won just his 2nd ATP title when winning without a dropped set on a clay court in Houston. He struggled a bit after the Tour moved to Europe though with 3 consecutive early exits from tournaments before the 3rd round exit from the French Open.
Tiafoe followed that with his first-ever ATP title on grass in Stuttgart in early June before he was eliminated in round 2 of the Queen’s Club tournament in his final appearance prior to the 2023 Wimbledon.
His Wimbledon presence was short too. The ‘Big Foe’ as Tiafoe is well known won his first 2 matches but in round 3 he lost in straight sets against the veteran Girgor Dimitrov.
Current ATP ranking – where is Tiafoe on the ATP list?
Tiafoe is currently in the 10th place in the ATP rankings, making him only the third black tennis player to enter the world’s top 10 in the history of the sport. Tiafoe entered the year number 19 in the rankings and he has made steady progress so far in 2023.
