Daniel Evans Australian Open 2023 Odds
Dan Evans is the British number one and also the 27th-best player in the world. He has been around for quite a while now, and he has competed in the Australian Open plenty of times. He came into the Australian Open as the 25th seed, and has dropped only one set over his first two rounds. Taking his ranking and recent form into account, and ahead of his third round match, the bookies have given the following outright odds for Evans:
His odds have tumbled from over 450 at the start of the competition but he has only once got through to the fourth round in Melbourne. It was back in 2017 when he got that far and last year he was eliminated at the third round stage. Evans has been playing some good tennis but it still feels like a very long shot at this stage of the tournament.
Upcoming match vs Rublev – Evans Australian Open 2023
Evans’ third round opponent is the 25 year old Russian, fifth seed Andrey Rublev. Although a casual observer would expect Rublev to triumph, it might not be quite as simple as that. The Russian has only once reached the Quarter Final of the Australian Open and needed five sets to get past world number 46, Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round.
The players are locked together at 3-3 in their head to head but it was Evans who came out on top, in straight sets, when they last met at the ATP Masters 1000 in Canada last year.
With all this in mind, Evans may not get a better chance in his career to advance to the fourth round stage in Melbourne.
Evans Australian Open – Recent Games
Dan Evans was knocked out of the Adelaide International 2 tournament in the round of 32 in the week before the start of the Australia Open. However, he was beaten by Rafael Nadal’s future second round conquerer Mackenzie McDonald, so maybe that wasn’t so bad a defeat. Since arriving in Melbourne, he has been playing to a very high standard. Here is his record from the last five games:
- Evans vs Chardy – won – 6-4, 6-4, 6-1
- Evans vs Bagnis – won – 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4
- Evans vs McDonald – lost – 5-7, 5-7
- Evans vs Tiafoe – lost – 6-3, 5-7, 3-6
- Evans vs Ramos-Vinolas – won – 6-3, 1-6, 6-3
The poor form of Evans has been replaced with some strong play in the opening days in Melbourne and he will be pleased that neither of his opening round games have gone the distance of five sets.
Evans Injury update: Perfectly okay
Injury wise, Evans looks in excellent condition with only the Melbourne heat looking capable of knocking the Englishman off his stride. Due to having big ears (his own admission), Evans refuses to wear a cap, and that could cause him some problems if the temperature does not drop at this tournament.
Dan Evans Past Aussie Open Results
Dan Evans first competed in the Australian Open in 2010. But back then, he didn’t have the ranking that he enjoys today. In fact, he had to go through qualifying, and he bowed out in the second round of the qualifiers that year. He repeated this performance in 2014, which was the next time that he competed at the Aussie Open after 2010. Evans then returned to the Australian Open in 2016, which was the first time he actually played in the main draw.
However, he lost his opening match. The following year in 2017 was when he enjoyed his best Australian Open performance. That year he made the 4th round, which was pretty impressive considering he’d never gone beyond the first round prior to that. But since then, Evans has struggled in Melbourne. He lost in the 2nd round in both 2019 and 2020. Things then got worse in 2021 when he lost in the first round once again.
Yet last year, there were signs that he might be figuring out how to play his best tennis in Melbourne. He made the 3rd round in 2022 before losing to Auger-Aliassime, which isn’t exactly a bad loss. And taking all of these results into account, we can confirm that Evans has a 50% win rate at the Australian Open.
Evans Australian Open 2023 Prediction – 4th round
Before the tournament began, we expected Evans to get as far as round three with the fourth round seeming a bit out of reach. However, due to his performances in the early rounds, and those of his third round opponent Rublev, we think he has every chance of matching his personal best performance at this Grand Slam.
We expect him to come up against Norwegian Holger Rune in the fourth round. Rune is ranked third in the world and beat Evans over three sets in their only meeting. A contest with Rune could be too close to call although it is likely that Rune would come into it as favourite.
Right now, it looks as though Evans could still go further than he’s gone before in Melbourne. He has some tough games to come but his performances have been very good so far.
