Despite high expectations and solid form since her return to tennis earlier this year, UK fans won’t be seeing Emma Raducanu at the Miami Open after she had to withdraw before her first-round duel with the Chinese player Wang Xiyu.
Emma Raducanu withdraws from Miami Open due a lower back injury, which came as a surprise since she showed no signs of trouble during her Indian Wells matches.
Raducanu once again on the sidelines
The 21-year-old is one of the greatest hopes for women’s UK tennis fans, but her career has been marred by injuries so far. Ever since winning the US Open in 2021, becoming the first British female player to win a Grand Slam title in singles since Virginia Wade won Wimbledon in 1977, Raducanu has struggled to stay on court and realise her full potential.

The young Brit returned to action this January after being absent from the court for eight months due to multiple ankle and wrist surgeries. Her return to tennis was a cause for optimism and, until now, she stayed relatively healhty.
Raducanu’s 2024 campaign
After the first three months of the 2024 season and her return to court after a lengthy absence, Raducanu has five wins and five losses to her name.
In January, Raducanu reached second rounds at Auckland Open and the first Major of the season, Australian Open. While that’s hardly a result she can be pleased with as a former Grand Slam champion, it was only her second tournament after the long pause.
Her struggles continued in the upcoming tournaments, but she seemed to be on her way to getting into good form in the latest tournament she played, Indian Wells. Raducanu beat Masarova and Yastremska to reach the third round at the BNP Paribas Open, better known as Indian Wells, but then she faltered against one of the best players in the world at the moment, Aryna Sabalenka.
