Diego Schwartzman vs Oleksii Krutykh Prediction and Odds: Australian Open 2023

Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman takes on Ukrainian Oleksii Krutykh, a player ranked 162 places below him, in round one of the Australian Open on Tuesday. A victory for Krutykh would be a major upset and Schwartzman is expected to cruise through this test.

These odds from Ladbrokes were correct at the time of writing.

Diego Schwartzman vs Oleksii Krutykh – Match Predictions

This should be an excellent contest between two players who will believe they have a good chance of reaching the second round. Shwartzman has a strong record in Melbourne whereas Krutykh has built up some winning momentum by reaching this stage after getting through three qualifying rounds. With that in mind, here are our betting predictions for this duel:

Krutykh to Win a Set – No

This match will be Oleksii Krutykh’s Grand Slam debut and, although he could well have an exciting career ahead of him, there is not much evidence pointing towards a successful clash with Shwartzman. Krutykh’s victories on the Challenger and Futures circuits have all come on clay and we do not expect him to be able to take a set of Shwartzman on this hard court.

Over 9-10 Games in First Set

Although Krutykh will have some nerves in his first appearance at this stage, we predict that he will go toe-to-toe with the Argentinian in the opening exchanges. Schwartzman is renowned for being a strong returner of serve although his own service is not particularly strong. We expect both players to break each other during the first set but for Schwartzman to go on to take it 6-3 or 6-4.

Diego Schwartzman vs Oleksii Krutykh Preview

Neither player is expected to be a genuine contender for the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, but let’s learn a little more on them both:

Diego Shwartzman

Ranked number 26 in the world, Schwartzman enjoys playing on the hard courts in Melbourne. He has got past the first round of the Australian Open in each of the last six tournaments and went as far as the fourth round in 2018 and 2020.

Oleksii Krutykh

The 22 year old right-hander is just taking his first steps at this level and has banked only $88,305 in career prize money so far. However, he beat World Number 108, Denis Kudla, in the final qualifying round to setup this contest with Shwartzman.
