Denis Shapovalov managed to make it among the Top 10 players in the ATP rankings early in his career. Even though he is not on the level he used to play, the Canadian is still young, and it is just a matter of time before he gets back where he belongs.

Shapovalov is back at Wimbledon, the Grand Slam where he has achieved the biggest success so far in his career. He started well defeating Radu Albot in the opening round, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. In the second round, Shapovalov defeated Gregoire Barrere 6-3, 6-4, 7-6. The third round, brought him a matchup against the wildcard Liam Broady, and the Canadian won 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, 7-5.
Shapovalov got through to the round of 16 at Wimbledon where he will played against Roman Safiullin. The match will probably take place on Saturday, July 8.

Roman Safiullin is having the best Grand Slam in his career and for the first time, he will play at least four matches in the majors. He is coming off a 7-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over Guido Pella in the third round. in the second, Safiullin also won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 against Corentin Moutet. He faced the biggest challenge in the opening round playing five sets against Roberto Bautista Agit for a final 2-6, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 win.
The 25-year-old Safiullin is currently 92nd in the ATP rankings, ten spots lower than his career high. he is 28-16 for the season and 8-3 on grass. He went through the qualifiers in both grass tournaments before Wimbledon. In Mallorca, Safiullin reached the round of 16 losing to Lloyd Harris. A week before, he lost to Jan-Lennard Struff in the opening round in Halle.
Safiullin’s best result this season was the third round of the Masters series tournaments in Madrid and Rome. He also won the Challenger in Koblenz defeating Vasek Pospisil in the final.
Shapovalov leads 2-0 in the head to heads against Safiullin. The last time they played was in the round of 16 at the beginning of the year where Shapovalov won 6-4, 6-3. At the 2022 ATP Cup, the Canadian won 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
Denis Shapovalov’s 2023 campaign so far
The 2023 season is not very good for Shapovalov. With the last win over Barrere, the Canadian has a 12-12 record for the season. Currently, he is 3-2 on grass, 3-3 on clay, 6-6 on hard and 0-1 indoors.
Before Wimbledon, Shapovalov played in Halle where he reached the second round. After the Canadian defeated Lloyd Harris 7-6, 6-4, he failed 6-2, 6-4 to Alexander Zverev.
Shapovalov opened the grass season and the preparations for Wimbledon in Stuttgart where he lost in the opening round 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Marton Fucsovics.
The clay season was not very successful for Shapovalov even though he had a nice run at Roland Garros. Before the second major of the year, the Canadian made appearances only in two tournaments on clay. He made it to the second round in Barcelona where he lost 6-3, 6-2 to Stefanos Tsitsipas after he went past Jozef Kovalik 6-3, 6-4. The following week, Shapovalov suffered a tough loss in the opening round in Madrid losing to Zhizhen Zhang 7-6, 4-6, 6-7.
Shapovalov showed up ready in Roland Garros starting with a 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3 win over Brandon Nakashima. In the second round, things were quite easier against Matteo Arnaldi as Shapovalov won 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. The draw made him face the top seed Carlos Alcaraz and the Spaniard was dominant with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win.
The first three months of the season, saw Shapovalov making it to the third round of the Australian Open. After beating Dusan Lajovic and Taro Daniel, Shapovalov was eliminated by Hubert Hurkacz in five sets, 7-6, 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3.
Current ATP ranking – where is Shapovalov on the ATP list?
Shapovalov is currently in the 29th place in the ATP rankings, which is still much lower than his career-high No. 10. He hasn’t played much so far this season and coming off a solid 34-26 record last year, which has obviously cost him a lot of points on the ATP tour.
