Ready for this semi-final clash between Daniil Medvedev and Frances Tiafoe? I sure am, and I’ve given some tennis predictions today for this blockbuster.
Medvedev -2.5 Games Handicap
Set Betting - Medvedev 2-0
These odds from Ladbrokes were correct at the time of writing.
Medvedev vs Tiafoe – Match Predictions
Daniil Medvedev is obviously the man of the moment right now. He is on a pretty sensational hot streak, with three titles from his last three. Furthermore, he’s now in the semi-finals of Indian Wells following a solid win over the 23rd seed, Davidovich Fokina in the previous round. With that said, he is going up against a talented and highly entertaining American in the form of Frances Tiafoe.
Of course, Medvedev is the favorite to win this match and advance to the finals, and I do believe that this will happen. But when it comes to some valuable betting options, I’ve got a couple of selections to consider here:
Medvedev -2.5 Games Handicap
The first prediction I have for this game is for Medvedev to win by a handicap of -2.5 or more. I just feel that when it comes to these crunch games, he really knuckles down and keeps things solid in all areas of his game. Furthermore, he has only lost one set to Tiafoe in their previous 4 meetings, with zero sets going beyond a 7-5 scoreline.
Set Betting – Medvedev 2-0
Given that I’ve gone for the -2.5 handicap, I may as well back this up with a 2-0 set prediction for Medvedev. As mentioned above, he has only ever lost one set to Tiafoe in the past, and this was in a best-of-five match at the 2020 Aussie Open. As for the other three matches they’ve played, Medvedev has pretty much schooled Tiafoe every time.
Medvedev vs Tiafoe Preview
Although this is a battle of the world number 6 against the world number 16, that’s not the whole story that you need to know for this one. And that’s why I’ve provided the following previews:
Daniil Medvedev Preview
As things stand, Medvedev is number 6 in the ATP rankings. This puts him ahead of Tiafoe, of course, but there’s more to this ranking than meets the eye. You’ve got to consider the form that Medvedev is currently in. With an 18-match win streak under his belt, plus the 4-0 head-to-head lead over Tiafoe, how could I not shoot for a Medvedev win here? But if that doesn’t quite justify the pick, let me also address Medvedev’s hard-court prowess.
As you may have noticed from his matches, Medvedev loves to hang back and nudge the opponent around. He has highly underrated defensive skills, and with the slower conditions of Indian Wells, I feel this suits him down to the ground. Furthermore, Tiafoe is a guy who likes to take on the ball and play a very attacking style of tennis. So if the unforced errors start flying for Tiafoe, this one could finish quickly.
Frances Tiafoe Preview
Tiafoe is a much flashier player than Medvedev, which can sometimes work in his favor – other times not! With that said, his style of play is certainly working in the 2023 Indian Wells event. He has yet to drop a set en route to the semi-finals, and he is playing some fine tennis. But if he is to really cause any problems from Medvedev, he will need to bring his A-game, for starters. He will also need to hit his spots with the serve and get his forehand into play as often as possible. This is the only way he can possibly hurt Medvedev, but he can play incredibly well on hard courts – as proved by his results over the last couple of years.
Medvedev vs Tiafoe Head to Head
As I’ve just mentioned, Tiafoe is playing great tennis at the moment. However, ‘great’ might not cut the mustard against the seemingly invincible Medvedev right now. And due to the 4-0 head-to-head record in Medvedev’s favor, Tiafoe has got a bit of a mountain to climb here. Additionally, every single match they’ve played against one another has been on outdoor hard courts. So if you base the upcoming game on the head-to-head record while taking the surface into account too, all signs point to a Medvedev victory.
