In the early hours of Friday morning (British Summer Time), number three seed and world number three Danii Medvedev will be in action having come through the first round in comfortable fashion. Can he produce more of the same against Australian Christopher O’Connell? We’ll soon find out. You can find our tennis predictions below.

Our favourite Daniil Medvedev vs Christopher O’Connell predictions

This is a huge game for both players. As the big favourite, Medvedev looks to avoid slipping up, which brings a certain kind of pressure, while Christopher O’Connell has the opportunity to show what he can do on the biggest stage. Below are my ATP US Open 2023 predictions for this match:

Over 29.5 Games @ 10/11

Daniil Medvedev made light work of beating the unranked Balazs last time out, so the contest naturally didn’t go reach the depths it could have, what with the Russian dropping only two games in a dominant performance, though we shouldn’t necessarily expect the same here. We saw prior to that match, as he lost 2-1 to Zverev in Cincinnati, that the world number three can make life hard for himself, while at Wimbledon, we saw that he can make blunders and drop sets against lower ranked players. His match against Eubanks went to five sets, while he also dropped a set against world number 57 Fucsovics at that tournament. O’Connell battled hard to beat an in-form Purcell in four sets last time out, while the Aussie pushed Medvedev when the pair last met, so we shouldn’t be surprised if plenty of games are played here.

Daniil Medvedev to Win 3-1 @ 13/5

Realistically, this is a good opportunity for the Russian to advance and although he’s unlikely to have things all his own way this time, he has the quality to progress, without a doubt. When the pair last met on a hard surface, the Russian won after dropping a set, so we could see something similar here. After all, he dropped a set before winning 3-1 against Fucsovics, who lurks around the same sort of spot at O’Connell currently does in the world rankings, at Wimbledon, so it wouldn’t be the greatest surprise if the man who won this tournament in 2021 dropped a set on his way to getting the job done.

Medvedev bids for more success at this tournament

Ahead of this 2023 US Open match, below is a quick preview of the two players involved.

Daniil Medvedev preview

It’s been a mixed bag for Medvedev in recent weeks. Naturally, he beat much weaker opposition in easy style during round one, but he came into this tournament off the back of losing to Zverev in Cincinnati, while he also tasted defeat against De Minaur a few weeks ago. We know how strong the Russian can be on a hard court, as he proved when winning his first Grand Slam title at Flushin Meadows a few years ago, but he needs to become more consistent if he’s going to go deep into the tournament in New York this time around.

Christopher O’Connell preview

Aussie Christhopher O’Connell played some excellent tennis to beat his countryman Purcell on match-day one, which was perhaps a tad surprising after the 29-year-old entered the tournament off the back of consecutive defeats. That win against an in-form player will have given him a real boost in confidence, but whether that will be enough for him to push Medvedev all the way remains to be seen. The man from Sydney has never been further than the second round at the US Open. Will this be his year?

Medvedev vs O’Connell head to head

This will be the third time that the pair have played each other. Back in 2022, Medvedev won by two sets to one in Qatar, while in 2020, the Russian won in straight sets at this tournament.
