It’s official – the 2024 Acapulco Open has arrived. And today, the first round matches are set to begin, with Evans vs Shelton serving as one of the more intriguing clashes. This means we’ve got tennis predictions today to cover several matches in this event, and my two tips for this one can be viewed below.
Our favourite Daniel Evans vs Ben Shelton predictions
Contents
Despite Ben Shelton being ranked 16 in the world, he isn’t seeded in Acapulco. That’s because the tournament only has 8 seeds, as confirmed in my ATP Acapulco Open preview. As for Dan Evans, he’s down at 42 in the rankings, which puts him as the underdog for this one.
Nevertheless, I’ve come up with two high-value predictions for this game based on all important factors.
Shelton to win 2-0 @ 10/11 (1.91)
With Shelton the higher-ranked player and with Evans struggling to find form in recent weeks and months, I think Shelton will take him out in straight sets. It’s not just their contrasting forms either, it’s the firepower that Shelton has, which will expose the weaknesses in Evans’ game.
Shelton -3.5 games handicap @ 10/11 (1.91)
Since I believe that Ben Shelton will get the job done in straight sets, it makes sense to follow things up with this market too. Of course, he has a monster serve, so he is immensely difficult to break. Yet, he will definitely get chances on the Evans serve, and he only needs one break in each set for this market to pull through.
Daniel Evans vs Ben Shelton odds
Evans is the underdog, with an implied chance of just 31.30% to win this one. However, Shelton has an implied probability of 75% to win.
Shelton set to blow Evans off the court in Acapulco opener
Now that I’ve shared my predictions for this match, let me provide a quick preview for each player too.
Daniel Evans preview
At this point, Dan Evans has won just two singles matches all season. One of these was in Adelaide prior to the Australian Open, and the other was in Los Cabos last week. That said, his form certainly doesn’t scream the kind of tennis that will help him beat a player like Ben Shelton right now.
Ben Shelton preview
Shelton has enjoyed a more successful season at this point compared with Dan Evans. He’s accumulated several decent wins in January and February, but he’s yet to go beyond the semi-finals in any tournament, which is a concern for a player of his ability. Therefore, he will no doubt be looking to change that in Acapulco.
Evans vs Shelton head to head
You’d have thought that these guys would’ve crossed paths at some point on the ATP Tour. But as it stands, Evans and Shelton have never played each other in an ATP-sanctioned event, so this will be the first head-to-head match on record.
