Cerundolo is ranked 21st in the world at the moment, seven places lower than his career-high. The 24-year-old is 17-12 for the season and 10-7 on clay. He made a huge upset in the previous round defeating the top ranked Italian player, Jannik Sinner, by 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. His previous two matches also went into the decisive sets and the Argentinian prevailed against Gregoire Barrere and Yiging Wu. Cerundolo’s best result this season was the quarterfinal in Miami where he lost to Karen Khachanov.
