Both wins so far were 3:1 with Brooksby struggling at times to keep his concentration on the next point. He lost several quick games in these first 2 matches after getting frustrated at himself for one thing or another.
That said beating the world number 3 and 2022 US Open finalists Ruud was an impressive achievement. On top of everything else Brooksby showed very strong will in this match as he wasted several match points in the third set to lose it, but still won set 4 6-2 in pretty convincing style. The one issue that should worry him and his camp was the fact that near the end of the match vs. Ruud the American started cramping. He never asked for medical time out, but clearly fatigue was bothering him.
Brooksby Injury update: Fatigue late in last game
Brooksby looked fully fit in round 1 and for the best part of round 2. However, late in the third set vs. Ruud and also midway through set 4 he had some muscle cramps and spend several breaks between play massaging intensely his thighs.
Brooksby was back out training the day before his clash vs. Paul. He looked fine, moved well and was in great mood. This suggests that his cramps were only a result of tiredness. Still this is something to consider regarding Brooksby’s chances in future matches.
