Brandon Nakashima has been drawn against Gregoire Barrere in the opening round of the 2023 Italian Open. Here’s how I think this one will play out.
These odds from Ladbrokes were correct at the time of writing.
Nakashima vs Barrere – Match Predictions
Contents
This is a pretty intriguing first-round clash for the Italian Open. The young American, Nakashima, will be playing the veteran Frenchman, Barrere in what promises to be a tight contest. The two have never actually played one another on the ATP Tour, which makes this one a little tricky to call. However, based on game style and recent form, I’ve crafted two tennis predictions today that you can back right now.
The two predictions below have solid Italian Open odds, and I believe that there is a good chance for them to pull through. So without further ado, here they are:
Barrere to Win
If you look at the recent form for these guys, neither is playing fantastic tennis. With that said, I believe that Barrere is playing marginally better than Nakashima, plus he has more experience on the clay overall. He has at least won a few matches on clay this season too, which is why I’m calling a Barrere victory over Nakashima.
Barrere +2.5 Games Handicap
Because I am shooting for Barrere to win, I’m also going for a +2.5 games handicap in his favour. He is the underdog in this match, as the odds confirm. However, he has a big serve and a dangerous game – certainly enough to challenge Nakashima and take the win. Yet since I am going for an underdog victory here, it makes sense to pick the handicap market too.
Nakashima vs Barrere Preview
If you are keen to learn a little more about these guys, let me give you a quick preview going into this first-round match.
Brandon Nakashima Preview
Currently, Nakashima is ranked 47 in the world. This puts him above Barrere, yet to be honest, there isn’t a huge difference in level for guys who are floating around these rankings. Adding to that, Nakashima has endured a ropey clay court season at best. He missed Houston and Monte Carlo through injury, and he then lost in the first round of a Challenger last week.
Gregoire Barrere Preview
Barrere is ranked 63 in the world at the moment. But looking through his recent clay court results, sure, he’s only won a couple of matches, but there is good news. He lost to the tournament winner in one of them, Dimitrov in another, and against the rising star, Fils, in the other. So he’s not been losing matches that he should be winning.
Nakashima vs Barrere Head to Head
As referenced earlier, these two guys have never played before. So there is absolutely zero information regarding the head-to-head that we can use for any predictions here. However, there is one thing that is guaranteed – one of them will lead the other after they play this match!
