Grigor Dimitrov To Win
Shelton does not fancy the clay court and avoided it during the 2022 campaign. Dimitrov has similar feelings despite his pedigree. He ran into the brick wall of Tsitsipas in three successive competitions, bidding farewell at each time of asking. Nevertheless, he should have enough in the tank to get past Shelton, who is still recovering from niggling injuries.

Shelton is struggling for wins and has been knocked out on the first hurdle in four of the seven tournaments he has participated in. Dominic Thiem ended his stay in Estoril in the second round and it looks unlikely that he will have an answer to Bulgarian. Given Shelton’s inconsistent displays recently, we are backing Dimitrov to cruise to the next stage with a straight-sets victory.

The 20-year-old American is ranked 39 in the world and it seems he will slide further at the end of the Monte Carlo Masters. Shelton’s preference for hard-court events is well established, where he has found more success. He added the Champaign Open to his ranks at the end of November 2022 but has struggled to give a decent account of his abilities since. The Australian Open remains an anomaly for him where he reached the quarterfinals, after which he has yet to string a couple of victories together.
Grigor Dimitrov
Back on European soil, Dimitrov will hope for positive results. He did reach the semi-finals in Rotterdam and has fond memories of his recent exploits on clay court, events in which he did not face Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek knocked him out of three successive competitions, prior to which he was the losing semi-finalist of the Monte Carlo Masters. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina knocked him out that time and he will hope to go better in the 116th edition of the competition.
