The 2024 US Open promises to be a classic event. And with all eyes fixed on the first-round matches, I’ve come up with a few tennis predictions today for a huge game involving Shelton and Thiem. Keep reading to see which markets to cover.
Our favourite Ben Shelton vs Dominic Thiem predictions
Contents
Here we have a battle of two guys who are at totally different stages in their careers. Shelton is still looking to assert himself as a top player and he is still young. In contrast, Thiem has been there and done all that, hence he is retiring at the end of the season. As for the way this match could go and the most valuable markets, let me share my thoughts now.
Thiem to win a set – yes @ 11/10 (2.10)
Although Thiem is a huge underdog in this match, I reckon he will sneak a set from Ben Shelton. He could even grab a couple of sets if he plays inspired tennis. However, with those odds available, the value of picking him to win a set is great.
Over 35.5 games @ 6/5 (2.20)
Assuming Dominic Thiem does manage to win a set, I see no reason that this match will fall short of 35.5 games. Both guys have strong serves, too, which means 7-5 or 7-6 set scores are likely.
Ben Shelton vs Dominic Thiem odds
The latest moneyline odds for this match show that Thiem has a 13.30% chance of winning this match while the probability for Shelton is much higher at 92.30%.
Thiem’s last hoorah in New York – what can he do against Shelton?
Will it be Thiem’s last match ever at the US Open or will he overcome the power of Ben Shelton? The following previews should help provide further answers to such questions.
Ben Shelton preview
The 2023 US Open was the tournament in which Ben Shelton made his big breakthrough in professional tennis. He reached the semis before being taken out by Novak Djokovic, so he will no doubt be confident ahead of this game. But he hasn’t been playing amazing in the build up to the US Open, which makes this a tricky match.
Dominic Thiem preview
Sadly, Dominic Thiem announced he will be retiring at the end of the 2024 season. This means that his match against Shelton could be the last time he ever competes at Flushing Meadows – unless he wins. He gained main draw entry as a wildcard this year, and to be honest, he can still produce incredible tennis when he is on form. Bear in mind he is also a former champion at the US Open!
Shelton vs Thiem head to head
The head-to-head records between Shelton and Thiem show that they are tied with one win each. However, Shelton’s win came in the US Open last year, during which Thiem was forced to retire after the first set. So, really, in terms of finished matches, it’s 1-0 in favour of Thiem.
