Belinda Bencic Injury Update 2023

We’ve reached a point in the WTA season where we know who is playing well, who isn’t, and who is looking likely to win some of the main events of the year. One of these players who would certainly fit the description of ‘playing well’ is Belinda Bencic. But like others on the WTA Tour, injury has struck at a pretty rough time for the promising Swiss player. I say that it’s a rough time because when you look at the form of the top players, Bencic ranks as one of the very best in terms of win/loss ratios for 2023.

Belinda Bencic Injury Update

To date, Bencic has snapped up 20 wins with just 6 losses in 2023, putting her at 4th on the list for most wins in 2023. So naturally, Bencic is a player who is threatening to capture titles as we move deeper into the season. However, as you’ve no doubt gathered from the heading here, Belinda Bencic has suffered an injury as we enter the main section of the clay court swing.

I’ve chosen to give you a Bencic injury update as many are concerned about whether she will be fit in time for Roland Garros. After all, the second slam of the season is a little over a month away. So to be injured at this point is far from ideal. With that said, things aren’t quite as catastrophic as some fans might be thinking. Let me give you the scoop right now.

Bencic Injury 2023: Detrimental, but Not Enough to Ruin Her Clay Court Season

At the time of writing, Belinda Bencic is 11th in the WTA rankings. She’s had a solid season up to this point, and this is a ranking that is well-deserved. However, injury has arrived to put a dent in her preparations for the next biggest tournament – Roland Garros. Bencic is suffering from a hip injury, which she claims had been causing her trouble since the Sunshine Swing in the USA.

Since then, she has competed in the Charleston Open, reaching the final before losing to Ons Jabeur. Yet Bencic announced on April 20th that the injury is severe enough to justify a break from the tour. Here’s what you need to know:

Withdrawal From Madrid and Rome

As you may already know, the Madrid Open and Rome Masters events are the two biggest clay court tournaments of the year on the WTA Tour. These are both 1000-level tournaments, and Madrid is scheduled to start next week. But unfortunately, Bencic has announced her withdrawal from both of these events. She stated that the hip injury is bad enough to justify the absence from these two tournaments.

Yet since the Rome Masters event finishes just one week before the 2023 French Open, this is a bit of a concern.

‘Back in a Few Weeks’

In her somewhat emotional social media post, Bencic said she would be ‘back in a few weeks’. This is obviously more promising news than the withdrawals from both Masters 1000 tournaments before the French Open. And at the same time, Belinda Bencic has said that she plans to be 100% ready for Roland Garros. I just hope that Bencic’s injury recovery goes as smoothly as she predicts.
