As I sit and write this article, the scheduled day-four matches haven’t even finished and there have been countless seeds exiting the tournament. Some of the biggest names in the men’s singles draw at the Australian Open have fallen in the second round. And when I say big names, I really do mean that the top seeds have vanished in their masses. Then again, this is Grand Slam tennis, and anything can happen over the course of a best-of-five set match.
If you’ve been tracking the results, you’ll already have an idea of who these big names are. However, if you have yet to catch the results of the round two matches that have been played overnight and this morning, you’ve come to the right spot. Below, I’ll be revealing the biggest upsets of the day, as well as highlighting what impacts their exits now have on the Australian Open.
Ready to check out these shocking results? Let’s take a look.
2023 Australian Open Upsets in Round Two – The Biggest Shocks
Contents
It’s fairly normal to see the odd seed or two fall in the early stages of a Grand Slam event. Yet even with that being true, it’s unusual to see such a bloodbath in the second round. It’s even more unusual to see so many upsets in just one day. However, we can’t pretend that the other guys who have upset the seeds haven’t played their part.
They most certainly have, and I’m excited to share these upsets with you right now.
Casper Ruud Out to Brooksby
This was probably the biggest surprise of day two for me. The number two seed, Casper Ruud, has fallen in just four sets to the American, Brooksy. Sure, Brooksby is a decent hard-court player, but I wouldn’t have put him in the same category as Casper Ruud. Furthermore, Ruud has made the finals of the last three Grand Slam tournaments, so this busts the bottom half of the draw wide open.
Alex Zverev Falls to Mmoh
I must admit, I was surprised that Zverev was listed as one of the top contenders to win the tournament by most bookmakers. He didn’t compete whatsoever for the second half of the 2022 season, and he’s been slowly working his way back to the match court in 2023. With that said, he was still the number 12 seed, so this is a big upset for just the second round. And most amazingly, his opponent got his spot in the men’s main draw as a lucky loser.
So he is obviously making the most of the chance he has been gifted.
Fritz Fails Against Popyrin
Both Taylor Fritz and Alex Zverev were in the same quarter of the men’s singles – both in the bottom half, of course. So within the space of a few hours, the number 8 seed, Taylor Fritz, has gone out and so has the number 12 seed. This loss was very surprising for me, especially with the form that Fritz has been showing recently.
Popyrin took down Fritz in an epic five-setter, ultimately securing the win by a score of 6-2 in the final set. Bear in mind he is a wildcard, so he’s also maximizing the chances that he has been awarded.
