It would be fair to say that there is plenty on the line for the 2023 Australian Open. Rafael Nadal is bidding to extend his career Grand Slams to 23 in total, which would be just incredible. Novak Djokovic is hoping to secure his 10th Australian Open title. Should he do this, he would equal Rafael Nadal with 22 career Grand Slams. Bear in mind that following the Australian Open is the French Open – a tournament where Nadal is still the King.
So really, Djokovic has plenty of pressure on his shoulders to produce the goods in Melbourne. With that said, it’s not just a two-horse race in Melbourne this year, not by any means. There is plenty on the line for other top players, including Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, and Carlos Alcaraz. As it happens, all of these guys can capture the number 1 ranking depending on their performance at the Australian Open.
This isn’t true for Nadal since he won the tournament last year. Therefore, he cannot increase the number of points that he currently holds. He can only equal it if he was to win the 2023 Australian Open. Anyway, with this in mind, I’d like to give you the scoop on what’s on the line concerning the number one ranking for the mentioned players.
ATP Number One Ranking up for Grabs at 2023 Australian Open

As things stand, the top five spots in the ATP rankings are occupied by the guys that I’ve mentioned above. This includes Rafael Nadal and the four guys who have a shot of taking the number one ranking in just a few weeks’ time. And as promised, I will now share the requirements for each of these guys if they are to take the number one ranking down under:
Novak Djokovic
Despite being absent from many of the top tournaments in 2022, Djokovic still finished the year as the 5th best player in the world, according to rankings. Adding to this, since he didn’t play in the 2022 Australian Open, he can rack up 2000 points in Melbourne. This is the case if he wins the tournament, which he must do to regain the top spot.
Stefanos Tsitsipas
Much like Djokovic, Tsitsipas has to win the 2023 Australian Open if he is to become the top-ranked player in the world. At the moment, Tsitsipas is 4th in the rankings, although he is just 1270 points shy of Carlos Alcaraz.
Casper Ruud
Casper Ruud had a ridiculous 2022 season. He made two Grand Slam finals and also made the final of the ATP Masters in Turin. Thanks to such a successful season, Ruud ended the year as the 3rd best player in the world. However, if he is to take the top spot, Ruud must make the final of the Australian Open 2023.
Carlos Alcaraz
Alcaraz is currently the number one ranked ATP player. He has 6820 points at the moment, which is exactly 800 more than Nadal, who is ranked 2nd. And thanks to such a lead concerning points, Alcaraz just needs to reach the fourth round to maintain the number one ranking.
