Each day that passes is another day closer to the highly anticipated End of Year Masters. And quite literally, each day counts for the guys that have yet to qualify. As a refresher, 5 of the 8 spots have been taken for Turin 2022. The guys that have taken the spots include Alcaraz, Nadal, Ruud, Tsitsipas, and Djokovic. This means that there is a limited number of spots left, and there is hardly any time remaining to pick up the necessary points.
That’s actually why many of the big guys have been playing lower-level tournaments in recent weeks, in case you were wondering. With that in mind, the recent results for certain players have helped to give them a considerable boost. I don’t mean that in terms of confidence either. I mean this in terms of their points tally and how this impacts their chances of securing a place in Turin 2022.
So, how are things looking right now and who are the main contenders for the remaining three spots? I’ve shared the details below.
Guys Looking Likely to Qualify
Contents
I should note before continuing that the Race to Turin is separate from the main ATP rankings. And this can cause a bit of confusion when speaking about guys who could qualify. However, if you look at the official rankings in the Race to Turin, this tells a clear picture of who is still in the running to qualify. Here they are:
Andrey Rublev
Rublev has been plugging away in recent weeks, and he has racked up some points to greatly help his campaign. He made the semis in Astana before losing to Tsitsipas. And at the time of writing, he is in the semis against Dominic Thiem in Gijon. This match is getting played today, so if he wins, he will gain even more points for Turin, and he is currently 6th in the rankings.
Felix Auger-Aliassime
It’s actually a very similar story with Auger-Aliassime regarding the Race to Turin. However, he didn’t enjoy quite the same success in Astana as Rublev did. In fact, he lost his opening game against Bautista-Agut, which didn’t help. Yet he has since redeemed himself in Florence this week, and he is due to compete in the semi-finals today. As for the live rankings in his bid for Turin 2022, he is currently 7th.
Daniil Medvedev
Medvedev has played just two tournaments since the 2022 US Open. He played in Metz, France, where he lost his opener to Stan Wawrinka. And he then went to compete in Astana, where he retired in the semi-finals against Djokovic after the game went one set apiece. However, Medvedev is still 5th in the running, so it’s likely he will seal a spot.
Taylor Fritz
The last guy I wanted to mention is Taylor Fritz. He has enjoyed a fantastic season in 2022, his best ever, in fact. And he boosted his chances of qualifying significantly after winning the tournament in Tokyo. Because of that, Fritz has also climbed inside the top 8 with just a few weeks to go.
