The end of year masters is rapidly approaching. And what is now dubbed as the ‘Race to Turin’ has been heating up in recent weeks. As a reminder, only the top 8 guys in the world will be able to compete in the ATP end-of-year masters. The event itself will be held from November 13th to 20th, and it is an indoor hard-court tournament. Turin took over as the host city from London, in case anybody was confusing the Turin end-of-year masters with the previous location of the O2 Arena in London.
Anyway, with just a few weeks left until qualification for Turin meets its deadline, the competition is looking fierce. Of course, players are desperate to make this event not only for the rankings points but also for prestige. And at the end of the day, the player that wins the tournament is crowned as the ‘end of year’ champion. Last year, Alex Zverev earned this accolade, but the 2022 event in Turin is wide open.
So without further ado, let me give you a rundown of the qualified players, as well as the guys that are still bidding to make it to Turin.
2022 End of Year Masters in Turin – Full Breakdown
Contents
At the time of writing, we’ve got 4 guys who have already qualified for Turin. This leaves four other spots open for other players to make it, and we really are at the business end of this qualification process. With that said, let’s run through both the qualified players and the potential qualifiers right now.
Qualified Players
As mentioned above, a total of 4 guys have already qualified for a place in the end-of-year masters. These players include Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, and Stefanos Tsitsipas. And the reason that they have already qualified is that they have enough points to guarantee that they won’t drop out of the top 8 in the race to Turin. Bear in mind that the Turin masters event counts points from the four Grand Slams, all 8 Masters 1000 events, as well as the ‘best results’ from seven other ATP-sanctioned events.
Of course, these four guys have done very well on the biggest stages this year, which is why they are all registered for Turin already.
Guys Who Can Still Qualify
This takes care of 50% of the final draw for Turin. But with four more spots up for grabs, things are looking pretty interesting. And the players that are in the running include the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz, Novak Djokovic, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Hubert Hurkacz, and several others. None of these guys has officially qualified yet, but they are still competing in other ATP tournaments in an effort to accumulate enough points.
As a reminder, there are still several tournaments due to be played over the next few weeks. And this also includes the final Masters 1000 event of the season, which is the Paris Masters. So anything could happen over the next few weeks, and I for one will be keeping a close eye on things.
