ATP Paris Masters Day One Recap – Main Talking Points

Yesterday was the first day of the Paris Masters – the final 1000-level event of the 2022 ATP season. Not all of the players were in action in their opening matches, but several big names took to the courts to battle it out. And I figured with day one now out of the way, now is the perfect time for a quick recap before the rest of the tournament plays out.

There were some fantastic matches played on the indoor courts in Paris yesterday, and you may have even watched some of them. Some top seeds were in action too including guys like Fritz, Norrie, and a few others. But rather than run you through the entire day’s events, let me keep things a little more compact.

ATP Paris Masters Day One

Below, I shall recap the big news from day one of the event. So please, have a read of the information given here to see what you may have missed so far.

Big Matches and Shock Defeats – Paris Masters Day One

I presented my picks for the first-round matches in Paris before the tournament started. Of course, these picks were based on the draw and which games I felt might be the most entertaining. And as it happens, a couple of the picks turned out to be epic battles between the guys involved. Therefore, as promised, let me take you through my favourite three matches from day one of the ATP Paris Masters right now.

Simon vs Murray

Of all the opening games, I would have to say that this was the one I was most excited about. For those who don’t know, Gilles Simon is retiring after the Paris Masters. And for a Frenchman, understandably, he wants to end his career on home soil. With that said, things weren’t looking great for Simon as he was drawn against Andy Murray. Amazingly, Simon had a 2-16 head-to-head record against Murray prior to this match.

However, he grinded things out from a set down to beat Murray for just the third time in his career. In doing so, Simon also avoided the pearly gates of retirement too.

Musetti vs Cilic

Here we had a clash between a young gun in the form of Musetti vs a true veteran of the game in Marin Cilic. Now, Musetti has been playing very well in recent weeks, yet Cilic was always going to be a threat. Cilic crushes the ball on both wings, and the indoor hard courts create even more bite to his groundstrokes. He is far more powerful than Musetti too, although this didn’t help him with the outcome yesterday.

Magic Musetti came through with a relatively straightforward win, in the end, beating Cilic by 6-4, 6-4. And he produced some awesome tennis in the process.

Husler vs Sinner

The last result is more of a shock than a match that proved to be spectacular. We all know that Sinner is one of the biggest talents out there at the moment. And he was bidding for a spot at the End of Year Masters this week. However, he went down to Husler in straight sets yesterday. He also seemed to be struggling with a hand problem, which I hope isn’t too serious.
