ATP Madrid Open 2023 – Three Underdogs You Need on Your Radar

At the time of writing, the first rounds of the Mutua Madrid Open are being played. Some have already been completed too, which officially sets up the opening rounds for the Madrid Open seeds on the men’s side. And to make sure you don’t miss the action – the seeded players will start their campaigns on Friday, April 28th.

Madrid Open Underdogs

With that said, I don’t want to continue talking about the top contenders today. Instead, I feel that a few other guys deserve a bit of attention regarding their chances in Madrid. After all, everyone is talking about the favorites, but not many are talking about the main underdogs at the event this year. So for those of you who love to check out the underdogs, and for punters looking to back an outsider or two – this one’s for you.

Below, I’ve discussed three Madrid Open underdogs that you should keep an eye on as the draw progresses.

2023 Madrid Open Underdogs – Check These Players Out

If you’ve been catching any of the matches over the last 24/48 hours, you may already have a few guys in mind who you’d like to watch. But if not, I’ve got a few players who are looking sharp on the dirt right now, and these guys will all be playing again over the coming days. So without further ado, let me highlight the three Madrid Open underdogs who I feel have a shot at going deep into the event.

Marco Cecchinato

Cecchinato came through qualifying to make the main draw at the Madrid Open. And earlier today, he took a pretty handy win over Marton Fucsovics. Now, Cecchinato can be a bit hit-and-miss regarding his form, as well as his overall desire to compete. However, having watched him play against Fucsovics earlier, he seems to be playing some solid tennis.

Bear in mind this man was a previous Roland Garros semi-finalist in 2018, so he knows how to pick up big wins on this surface. With that said, he has a tough test against De Minaur in the next round.

Stan Wawrinka

Wawrinka doesn’t really need an introduction these days. The man is a multi-slam winner – pretty much the only guy to have picked up Grand Slam wins during the era of the big three. And as you might recall, Wawrinka has won the French Open before. Sure, this was a while ago, but when ‘Stan the Man’ finds top gear, he can pretty much take down anyone on his day.

As for his performance in Madrid so far, he squeezed through a very tight opener against Cressy on Wednesday – taking the win 7-6 in the final set. He now plays Rublev in the second round too, which is a tall ask, but Wawrinka can still produce sensational tennis when he’s feeling it.

Lorenzo Musetti

Last but not least, I’m throwing in Musetti as the third underdog to watch. Musetti is an incredibly talented player, and he took down Djokovic in Monte Carlo just a few weeks ago. He actually has the best draw out of the three underdogs I’ve listed here too. So I really can see Musetti reaching the 4th round or even further this year.
