The 2023 women’s Australian Open has officially reached its conclusion. On Saturday morning, Aryna Sabalenka fought from behind to defeat Elena Rybakina in a three-set thriller. Having dropped the first set by a score of 6-4, Sabalenka showed why she is one of the best players in the world at the moment. She dug deep and battled to claim the second set by a score of 6-3. And when push came to shove in the final set, she had the edge to win the 2023 Australian Open.
The final set finished 6-4 in Sabalenka’s favor, and she immediately fell to the floor in floods of tears. It was a rather heartwarming moment where all of the pressure, tension, and emotions were just let loose. Even her coach was in floods of tears in the box, which tells you all you need to know about how much had gone into this victory.
This Grand Slam victory tops off a truly phenomenal run for Aryna Sabalenka in Australia. As you may recall, she also won the warm-up tournament – the Adelaide International. So really, she has been absolutely flawless during her competitive swing down under. And to be perfectly honest, she deserved to take the championships given her form, fighting spirit, as well as her relentless pursuit to be the best.
Keeping these things in mind, I’d like to share a few things that Sabalenka has been able to achieve as a result of winning this match.
Aryna Sabalenka – The Queen of Melbourne in 2023
Contents
Sabalenka was one of the favorites going into the 2023 Australian Open. But as we all know, being the favorite and going out there and getting the job done are two very different things. Yet Sabalenka has done exactly what she set out to do – she won the Australian Open! And on that note, let me share some pretty impressive things that she has demonstrated in the process:
First Grand Slam Title
Some of you may know this, yet some of you won’t. As it happens, despite the fact that Sabalenka has been a top player for quite a while, she has never won a Grand Slam title. With that said, she had made three semi-finals before this tournament at Grand Slam level. But she’d never taken the next step and won one – until now.
Fourth Win in a Row Over Rybakina
Although Rybakina took Sabalenka in an exhibition match recently, this win doesn’t officially go on the record. As for on the record matches, this is the 4th time in a row that Sabalenka has defeated Elena Rybakina, taking the head-to-head to 4-0 in her favor. Amazingly, it’s also the fourth time in a row that she has beaten Rybakina in a deciding set.
New Ranking of Number 2
Sabalenka has been ranked as high as number 1 in the world before. Yet this was back in February 2021. However, with this title, Sabalenka has now racked up 2000 points, which will take her to number 2 in the world. And from here, who knows, maybe she can continue this form and knock Iga Swiatek off the top spot in 2023? We shall have to wait and see.
