Andrey Rublev vs Dominic Thiem Prediction and Odds: Australian Open 2023

In arguably the biggest tie of the first round of the Australian Open, Russia’s Andrey Rublev, ranked sixth in the world, takes on Austria’s Dominic Thiem, the former world number three, who is working his way back up the rankings after a wrist injury.

These odds from Ladbrokes were correct at the time of writing.

Andrey Rublev vs Dominic Thiem – Match Predictions

Rublev has contested six Grand Slam quarter finals, but has never got beyond that stage, whereas Thiem has reached three finals, including here in Melbourne in 2020. Check out our suggestions below as well as our other tennis predictions here:

Rublev to Win the Match

The Russian comes into this contest aiming for his fifth successive victory over Thiem. In fact, you need to go back to Monaco in 2018 to find the last time that the Austrian triumphed over Rublev! Thiem is expected to get back to the top of the men’s game but at the moment he still has quite a long journey ahead of him.

Thiem to Win a Set

Thiem has lost in straight sets to Rublev in all of the last four games, but those matches were all best of three. Towards the end of 2022, the Austrian showed signs of returning to his best, and we expect the John Cain Arena to take him up another level. Knocking out the world number six is unlikely but there is an excellent chance of Thiem picking up a set in this match.

Andrey Rublev vs Dominic Thiem Preview

Very rarely do two players of such quality get drawn against each other in the opening round of a Grand Slam. But with Thiem being offered a wildcard entry to the Australian Open, all tennis fans are in for a treat. Let’s focus on the two individuals.

Andrey Rublev

The 25 year old Russian has just gone over $15,000,000 in his career prize money but is yet to reach the final four of a Grand Slam. He has been knocked out in round one at the Australian Open in only one of the last six years and got to the last eight in 2018 before being eliminated by eventual runner-up, Danii Medvedev.

Dominic Thiem

The 29 year old right-hander turned pro in 2011 and has been a regular in the second week of Grand Slams from 2016 onwards. He lost in the Australian Open Final in 2020, going down in five sets to Novak Djokovic, and was beaten in successive French Open Finals by Rafael Nadal in 2018 and 2019. His game has developed from being purely a base-liner to a more complete player.

Andrey Rublev vs Dominic Thiem Head to Head

Rublev leads the head to head 4-2 with Thiem’s last victory coming on clay in Monaco in 2018. This is the first time that they will contest a Grand Slam match.
