The defending champion is set to start his campaign at the Monte Carlo Masters. Andrey Rublev will take on Alexei Popyrin in round two, and I’ve got a couple of tennis predictions today for you to check out.

Our favourite Alexei Popyrin vs Andrey Rublev predictions

Justifiably, Andrey Rublev is mentioned in my Monte Carlo 2024 preview since he won the event in 2023. But for me, that was a strange result, as Rublev’s game doesn’t inherently suit clay court tennis too well. Nevertheless, you don’t win 1000 level tournaments without deserving it.

He has a tough game for this 2024 Monte Carlo Masters opener, however, which brings me to the following predictions:

Rublev to win 2-0 @ 4/5 (1.80)

Not only is Rublev the defending champion, but he’s also beaten Popyrin in straight sets before. Arguably, that win came on Popyrin’s favoured surface too, which is indoor hard courts. So now that they are playing on clay, I’ve got to take Rublev in straight sets.

Rublev -3.5 games handicap @ 3/4 (1.75)

It’s interesting that we have such a favourable handicap for Rublev here. After all, he’d only need a single break in each set to secure the win for this market. If you combine this with the previous prediction too, you could score a 2/2 concerning bets made and payouts received (not guaranteed, of course).

Alexei Popyrin vs Andrey Rublev odds

The latest odds indicate that Rublev has a 77.80% probability of winning this game. As for Popyrin, his chance of victory is down at 28.60%.

Rublev seeking a confidence-building win over Popyrin in round two

Before this round two match begins, let me give you some important information for each individual:

Alexei Popyrin preview

At 46 in the ATP rankings, Popyrin can clearly play some ball. But he’s not really a clay court player, nor is he the greatest mover on this surface. Then again, he did pick up a hard-fought win in round one against a decent clay-court player in the form of Moutet. However, Rublev is in a different league to the French qualifier, so he has his work cut out here.

Andrey Rublev preview

The 2023 Monte Carlo Masters was the first 1000-level event Rublev won in his career. So he will obviously feel good about returning to this venue, but he can’t waste too much time in finding his clay court feet. That’s because Popyrin does have a big game, even if he isn’t exactly a clay court specialist. But if Rublev comes out of the blocks quickly, this could be a routine victory.

Popyrin vs Rublev head to head

These guys have only faced each other once on the ATP Tour. This was in 2023, and Rublev got the better of Popyrin in straight sets, but it was a relatively close game. That said, their previous match was on indoor hard courts, so this clay court match could be quite different.
