Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev head to head – Will we see another win for the Spaniard?

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz and third seed Daniil Medvedev will meet in the semi final of US Open, just a couple of months after they met in the same stage of another Grand Slam, Wimbledon.

The duo have impressed with their all-around court coverage and immaculate shot selection to get this far, but only one of them will progress for the championship bout. With six title triumphs on the tour in 2023, Alcaraz will fancy his chances, but getting past Medvedev at Flushing Meadows can prove to be tricky. After all, both players have previously triumphed at US Open – Alcaraz last year, Medvedev in 2021.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev: Overall Head-to-Head Record

Despite his relative inexperience, Alcaraz has shown his penchant for the maximum. He has mixed it up with the best in the game and come out victorious with battle scars to show for it. This will be his fourth meeting with Medvedev and his third of the year. The young Spaniard came out on top in their Indian Wells final showdown and in Wimbledon semi-finals, so he has a 2-1 lead over the Russian.

The Russian ace has had an impressive year, breaking records galore in the process. Medvedev made it to five successive finals, triumphing on four occasions. He also silenced his critics on clay, claiming the Rome Masters title. The former world number 1 needs to triumph to close the gap on Alcaraz and Djokovic and has shown in the past to deliver when it counts.

2023 Wimbledon semi final – Alcaraz vs Medvedev 6-3, 6-3, 6-3

The last duel between these two players was their most important one, although the one before in Indian Wells final was also a significant match. Still, fighting for a place in Wimbledon final brought a lot of anticipation to this duel and many pundits expected a close and exciting duel.

However, the young Spaniard dispatched of Medvedev pretty much routinely, beating the Russian 3-0, taking all three sets with the same score – 6-3. As we all know, this was just a step to Alacaraz’s title run since he later beat the probable GOAT Novak Djokovic in the final to claim his first Wimbledon title and second Major of his young career.

2023 Indian Wells final – Alcaraz vs Medvedev 6-3, 6-2

The first half of 2023 saw Medvedev blast everyone apart. The Russian maverick enjoyed his best form on the court, reaching five finals in succession. He triumphed on four occasions, the only misstep of this glorious run coming at Indian Wells where he met Alcaraz.

The Spaniard paid no attention to Medvedev’s record-breaking journey at the Tennis Garden. The tired Russian ace could never get going as as evident from his 61% first serve points won as compared to Alcaraz’s 81%. It was a swift execution, lasting only 72 minutes. Alcaraz was in complete control and at his devastating best, carving out three breakpoint opportunities and converting them on each occasion.

2021 Wimbledon second round – Alcaraz vs Medvedev 4-6, 1-6, 2-6

The duo’s first meeting was at the hallowed grounds of the All England Club back in 2021. Alcaraz had received a wild card entry while Medvedev was the second seed at the Championships. Prior to this meeting, the Spaniard was involved in a five-set duel with lucky loser Yasutaka Uchiyama, while Medvedev beat Jan-Lennard Struff 3-1 to overcome the first hurdle.

Still transitioning from amateur to professional tennis, the then 18-year-old Alcaraz found the going tough on the green surface and its pace. He was dispatched off by Medvedev, who went for the kill from the get-go. While of no consequence in the end, Alcaraz went packing after breaking the second seed once in their second-round bout. However, the young Spaniard impressed by saving 8 of the 15 breakpoint opportunities Medvedev carved out.
