The second half of Wimbledon’s round of 16 matches will be played on Monday, and one of the matches fans are anticipating is Carlos Alcaraz vs Matteo Berrettini. Although these players have previously met a couple of times, this will be their first encounter on grass.
To be fair, neither player has won this tournament in the past. However, Berrettini is a former Wimbledon finalist, while his Spanish opponent has a grand slam title to his name. With both players setting their sights on a quarter-final spot, let’s take a look at their previous encounters.

It’s important to note that Carlos Alcaraz and Matteo Berrettini first met at the Vienna Open in October 2021, where the Spaniard prevailed in three sets. These players proceeded to meet two more times within the next four months. Interestingly, Carlos Alcaraz currently leads the head-to-head between these players, having won two of their three previous skirmishes. We would also like to point out that previous clashes between these players have not been one-sided; as they all ended in maximum sets. Furthermore, the only other time these players met in a grand slam, Matteo Berrettini emerged victorious.
2022 Rio Open Quarter-final: Carlos Alcaraz Wins 6-2, 2-6, 6-2
Although Carlos Alcaraz is the current World number 1, things were different the last time these players met. It may interest you to know that when these players clashed at the Rio de Janeiro Open last year, Matteo Berrettini was the top seed, while Alcaraz was seeded 7th. 2022 Australian Open Round of 32: Matteo Berrettini Wins 6-2, 7-6, 4-6, 2-6, 7-6
The only other time these players squared off against each other in a grand slam event was at the Australian Open last year. This time, Matteo Berrettini was the seventh seeded player in the tournament, while Carlos Alcaraz was seeded 31st. As expected, Berrettini started strong, taking the first two sets, and was on course for a straight sets victory. However, Alcaraz tried to claw his way back into the match; as he took the next two sets, forcing a decider. Unfortunately, it was the Italian player who reigned supreme in the fifth-set tie break.
2021 Vienna Open Quarter-final: Carlos Alcaraz Wins 6-1, 6-7, 7-6
Carlos Alcaraz and Matteo Berrettini clashed for the first time at the Vienna Open two years ago. While Berrettini was the third seeded player in the competition, his Spanish opponent was unseeded. It’s important to note that this was the only time Berrettini was favoured over Alcaraz; he has been the underdog in skirmishes between these players ever since, including today’s meeting. Interestingly, Carlos Alcaraz took the first set in style, cruising through a 6-1 victory. Although Berrettini fought back to win the second set, his efforts proved to be futile as he lost the deciding set’s tie break.
