For those who haven’t seen the schedule yet, the Australian Open 2023 will kick off on January 16th – just two weeks away. We’ve already seen the list of entrants and associated seeds for the women’s tournament too, which is exciting enough. However, what many people haven’t considered yet is whether we will see an underdog become victorious in Melbourne this year. Compared to the men’s event, which has been dominated by three guys for almost two decades, the women’s tournament has been far more open.
This alone sets the stage for a possible underdog to go all the way in Melbourne. And since the tournament is approaching rapidly, I’ve taken a look at three dark horses who could upset the odds. The three players I am about to mention all have an outside shot of winning the 2023 Australian Open. Even if the odds show that their chances are slim, I believe that they still have a realistic opportunity to win the tournament.
So without further ado, let me reveal the three players who could defy the odds and win the tournament in a few weeks’ time.
Australian Open 2023 – Underdogs for the Women’s Championships
Contents
It goes without saying that names like Swiatek, Jabeur, Gauff, and Garcia are floating around in the debate about who might win the 2023 Australian Open. Of course, these are the players with the biggest chances to lift the trophy. However, we are not focusing on the favorites here. Instead, we are looking at some other players who have the ability to shine through and cause problems for the world’s best players.
And by ‘cause problems’, I mean that they could well win the tournament if they play to the best of their abilities. On that note, here are the three dark horses that I’ve picked for the women’s tournament:
Elena Rybakina – 17.00 Odds
I have to admit, I didn’t know much about Elena Rybakina before the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. But having watched her play at the All England Club, I believe that she is a force to be reckoned with. She has a huge game, particularly concerning her serve and forehand. And in the dry heat of Melbourne, these are traits that could take her all the way.
Naomi Osaka – 17.00 Odds
Naomi Osaka hasn’t been as dominant as everyone had predicted when she hit the big time by winning the 2018 US Open. Since then, Osaka has won three more Grand Slam titles, including two Australian Open titles. These were earned in 2019 and 2021, so she obviously knows what it takes to win this enormous tournament. Yet at the moment, Osaka is down to number 42 in the world. This is why the odds for her to win the 2023 Australian Open are so high.
Emma Raducanu – 34.00 Odds
Raducanu is a player that doesn’t need much of an introduction these days. She shot to fame by winning the 2021 US Open as a qualifier, and she showed how powerful her game is during that tournament. However, she’s been a little up and down since then, which has led to the drop to number 78 in the WTA rankings.
With that said, I feel that the pressure of winning the 2021 US Open may have now subsided enough for her to enjoy another big run at a Grand Slam.
