Two players who’ve produced career-best efforts at this tournament so far by reaching the quarter-finals for the first time will clash at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday afternoon (British Summer Time). Romania’s Sorana Cirstea takes on Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic in what is an interesting and not-easy-to-call match. You can find our tennis predictions below.
Our favourite Sorana Cirstea vs Karolina Muchova predictions
Contents
After reaching the French Open final only to be denied the victory, Karolina Muchova is in search Grand Slam victory here, though to move one step closer to a second slam final of the season, she’ll need to beat a player in Cirstea, who on her day, can upset the best in the business. Below are my WTA US Open 2023 predictions for this match:
Sorana Cirstea to win @ 6/4 (2.50)
Sorana Cirstea lost when the pair met less than a month ago in Toronto, but it was a close match and there really wasn’t much in it. For my money, since that match, it is the Romanian who has moved forward the most. Her hard-fought win against Grand Slam winner and world number four Rybakina makes her look a stronger candidate here than 6/4 suggests, so such a price offers value to my eyes, while she was clearly full of confidence when beating world number 13 Bencic in straight sets last time out. Don’t be surprised if she pulls off another big win here.
Three sets to be played @ 11/8 (2.38)
When the pair last met, just under a month ago, only two sets were played, but neither of those sets were one-sided, so the match could very easily have gone to three sets. As mentioned above, Cirstea has seemingly improved since that defeat and is now firing on all cylinders, so she can push her Czech opponent even harder, which makes a three-set match seem perhaps a fraction more likely than early odds of 11/8 suggest. After all, Muchova was taken to three sets by Wang Xin last time out, and it’s fair to say that Cirstea is a better player.
One player will go further than before
As touched on above, this is a career-best for both players, who are each reaching the quarter-finals for the first time, which means that one will definitely be in a first US Open semi-final of their career. Let’s take a quick look at how both players have been faring.
Sorana Cirstea preview
Sorana Cirstea, at 33-year-old is now entering the twilight of her career, but she’s enjoyed some very strong form since switching back to a hard surface recently, so is absolutely not to be written off just yet. She arrives here having beaten some very good players of late, while the Romanian looked as confident as she has done all season last time out.
Karolina Muchova preview
Muchova has experienced a very good 2023 season, a season which has seen her compete with some of the very best. She reached her first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros back in early June, losing in three sets to world number one Swiatek. She’s since competed well on a hard surface too, winning nine of her last ten matches.
Cirstea vs Muchova head to head
These two are not strangers having met four times before. Each of the previous renewals of this match have been on a hard surface. Muchova has three wins, while Cirstea has one. Less than a month ago, Muchova won 2-0 in Toronto, beating Cirstea 7-5, 6-4.
